We have a 15 week old girl, Saige. About a week ago we found out she has a UTI and struvite crystals. About two weeks prior, we weined her from Nutra-Nugget puppy mix to Taste of the Wild puppy mix. Has anyone had similar issues and found it was food related; puppy related; coincidental? The vet said totw may have too much protein for her but it's about the same as the Nutra. The vet is having us feed her Science Diet S/D canned food through the end of the month for the crystals and a medication for the UTI.

Any other info you'd need to help us out?

I doubt it is the food. UTIs are pretty common in female puppies. I am also not sure I would change her food again to Science Diet as that is likely to give her runny poop. To be honest, vets always try to put dogs on SD probably because SD has done a fantastic marketing job. One of my puppy buyers had problems with her new puppy getting runny poop when they got home so she took him to the vet and they tried all kinds of things including changing the food several times. She called me and I told her to pick a food and stay with it, give him some pepto and if he is still runny the next day add in immodium, but don't change the food. He was all cleared up in just a couple of days. In this case, the fact that they kept changing the food was keeping the poor baby all messed up.

Also I suspect they also gave you antibiotics which may also cause stomach issues, so I would stick with your TOTW and add in some plain yogurt to keep him little gut healthy. The antibiotic will likely clear up the UTI, but be sure you get it rechecked after she finishes the antibiotics.

As for hight protein and fat, just check the puppy food. It is almost identical to the high performance adult and all stages dog food. With shorthairs they also typically do better on high protein/fat diets. I feed all of mine the Purina Pro Plan Performance which is a very hot dog food. Most of the field trialers use it, but I have found that my dogs do really well on it too. It also works for puppies because it is an all stages food too.

Good luck and welcome to the forum. Don't forget we also love to see pictures.

Max had struvite crystals. I ultimately had him operated on to remove it I am glad your vet caught it early. It wasn't until I found our current vet that this problem was corrected. First vet said UTI gave anti-biotic until bleeding cleared. Struvite is nasty stuff . Second vet said same thing & did same thing & we got the same results. Third & final vet was a husband & wife team & they went through him & figured it out. I hope your pup is able to pass the crystals . With all the trips to the vet's Max's were just growing and unpassable. Good luck stay on top of it. I am sure you will .
