There is a difference. When I learned the difference, I learned father to daughter, mother to son, sibling to sibling (brother to sister, or vice versa) is inbreeding. It should be done ONLY with careful consideration of the pedigree, back 3-4 generations and you have to realize that good or bad traits can show up from WAY back, several generations or more. If the pedigree is good on both dogs back 3 generations with few faults that would concern me for show, Field Trial dogs, or whatever I was breeding for, I would consider it. Conformation and athletic ability and temperament of all the dogs in the first 3 generations are most important with this kind of breeding.
In line breeding the dogs are not as closely related as in the Inbreeding described above, but there are relationships to be considered carefully. You still should research the breeding carefully.
Outcrossing... none of the same dogs in the first 2-3 generations. Still consider carefully. This is the least sure method of breeding as the gene pool can be "all over the place".
Any breeding should be carefully considered before we get pups on the ground because if proper homes cannot be found, the pups are in danger of possibly very sad lives.
