I got my new issue of Shorthair Journal and see lots of stud dogs with the note to approved dams only.  Now being new to the game in comparison to some folks here, what are the "typical" desires of these stud owners for breeding?  I am not looking to breed anytime soon just get educated on the scope of it.

I would look for health clearances, pedigree, titles or at least the venues dogs are competing in and how they are doing, also how they would complement my male and of course temperament. Not necessarily listed in order of importance and by no means a comprehensive list, but that's where I would start.

Agree with Bev as above, but add to that a negative brucellosis test within 30 days of the breeding. I also will only breed if I can supervise the breeding to ensure that the female doesn't attack my male and that I can hold the dogs together during the tie so the male's business parts are not injured.

I will only breed to a dog that I know or have a good reference. My reason, my stud dog will sometimes get the credit for good pups but will always get the blame for poor ones. For whatever reason, the known dog must have been the culprit of any problems, no range, health, lack of point, etc. Therefore, as above, neg Brucellosis, prefer OFA Excellent, temperament, pedigree, etc , but better be proven one way or another. I turn down way more than I accept.

IIMHO, the stud fee isn't worth the potential blame in bad press.
