Hi all, I was wondering when exactly the sexual maturity age of the breed was. I have a male that is almost 6 months and will not stop mounting my roommate's female lab. She's fixed so no chance of anything happening but still quite annoying. I have his papers and he's registered so depending on how he hunts I was waiting to see if I would have him neutered or not. Just wondering at what point they are fully mature, and if he is just going through a phase or not. Thanks for all the help. TSL

Sounds more like a dominance thing going on. Poor lab. She is to submissive. She should really tell him where to go. If the humans start taking charge he will stop this behavior.

Definitely not at 6 months. I would say between a year and 16 months. I suspect that he is positioning in the pack and the lab is very submissive. I would put a stop to it. Ringo, my 15 month old male, tried that with my girls (one spayed and one not) when he was about that age. Neither would tolerate it. That phase lasted not so long. Good luck!

Ok thanks alot for the input. I definitely knew he wasnt able to actually breed yet, just wasn't sure at what age they started. He actually is the dominant dog which I continue to try to stop. Between the 6 of us guys who hunt together and all go to school together he is the youngest and smallest dog yet has established himself even above two 100+ lb labs. I actually spoke to Terri Marinier at LCS Bird Dog Day last weekend and was told having the dominant dog isn't bad. I just have to constantly watch and make sure he doesn't get too rough.

Don't be too sure on that age thing...I know of more than one mother-son accidentally bred litter. One pup was a daddy at 5 months...not what you want, but there are days..... Phyllis and the Singltrak Furtribe

I think it has more to do with horny than dominance. Young males are generally that way thru puberty, up to year 1/2 or so. I would discourage it, rolled up paper and a tap and Then when you say ahhh he knows to stop it.

With Ringo I am fairly certain it was dominance. He was about the same age at this pup and as soon as the girls got after him for it he quit. He never tried the humping on anything or anyone else and I think he would have had it been horny.

I agree. A little training and the behavior will stop. Try training the dog and take charge.

German Shorthaired Pointer training is something I need to put in my mind and heart to make it successful.
