I am researching the adoption process as it pertains to routine vet visits does teh below sound about right? and what about the Humane society working on your pup...read below... $140 for the 12 week vaccines which are distemper and Bordatella (SP??), de-worming fecal tests and such. about the same for 16 week visit which is the earliest time they would Neuter. RE: Neuter they charge $180 and said that the difference is that they have a heart rate monitor and they provide pain medication which the humane society does not have / provide. Is this a real concern or justification for making me $130 lighter?? Saving $130 sound great but I don't want my new best buddy to be in any pain (little is comfort, I'm fine with), but the other concern is just sanitation and that I imagine that they are milling the dogs through there one right after the other... Thoughts??

The vaccinations would be a bit high for my area. $180 for the neuter doesn't seem so bad, though. I'd definitely do it at your vet vs. the humane society. High volume spay/neuter clinics just try to get everything out as fast as possible. If I were you, I'd also postpone the neuter for a bit as well... atleast until he is a year or so.

Depends on where you are located on the vaccines, etc. I am assuming that also includes the yearly physical and not just the vaccines. So, if it includes a physical where the vet goes over the dog, listens to the heart, checks eyes, eats, etc., then that is probably about right. The neuter isn't too bad either price wise. I would definitely take my dog to the vet and not a mass production neutering facility. I would also wait until your pup is at least a year old to allow him to mature. The larger dogs that are neutered too early tend to be a bit leggy and don't develop as nicely as dogs where they waited to neuter.

Here is a picture of my boy, Jake. Neutered at 5 mos -- he is leggy and very narrow. He is over 2.5 years in this photo.

I suspect for the males it has to do with when the dog reaches sexual maturity. At that point the males put on allot more muscle and fill out. If they are neutered before they reach sexual maturity they never get that boost from all the male hormones and thus they do not develop the muscle. The females do the same thing, but it is not a noticeable in females.

For my area that would be very high. I don't give paiin meds after a nueter, and probably wouldn't have a problem having the hs do it (I am sure the vet there does a million and has tons of expierience) and having been there and done that, it isn't brain surgery. As to the leggy thing, it is actually because testosterone is what causes the growth plates to close when they do, so in a dog nuetered young that doesn't get that clue, they continue to grow for a longer time and the dogs look like they are on stilts, Jake in the photo above, doesn't look that bad, I have seen much worse. Imagine a deerhound or wolfhound, with a gs body. In horses, geldings are almost always taller then stallions of the same breed/line for the same reason. I would wait until he is at least one, preferably one and a half.

While it is fine to wait to neuter until a year or later when purchasing a dog, a humane society or a rescue will often require a dog to be neutered before it is adopted or shortly thereafter, unless the dog is ill or elderly. And I am glad they do, because accidental breedings do happen. So, you may need to check out the policy of the place you are adopting from. If they allow you to wait until 12 months, great. If not, your dog will be fine being neutered younger. My parents owned a Labrador for 14 1/2 years that was neutered at 5 months of age. My male Shelties (smaller breed, I admit) were neutered at 7-months of age. One lived to be 16 and the other is a healthy 9, still running agility. Eleanor in NJ

You'll find out that GSPs are very stoic about pain. I have never used most of the pain pills given to me when my dog had surgery or stitches. They just don't hold still long enough to take them. Molly came home from being spayed and was ready to go running. The trick is to keep them quiet.
