You have received good advice. The only think I would add is every dog is different with potty training. My 3 female GSPs were pretty easy to train, but my boy was much harder. His breeder didn't clean the puppy area as much as I think it should have been cleaned which may have contributed to the issue. He also had a regression at 5 months. So I think if you can anticipate his needs that would help and also be patient.

Jena, in response to your question. Yes, Zoe is spayed but I waited until she was 9 1/2 months old and had developed more - my original plan was to have her spayed at 6 months but my vet advised me not to.

I use a mobile vet that is exceptional - he's no bull and tells it like it is and will often suggest over the counter things instead of prescibing expensive medications. When Zoe was about 5 months old I boarded her at a vet/kennel and they gave me a free office visit so I consulted with the vet there about the frequent urination, they ran some tests and found she had crystals in her urine and a UTI so they prescribed Clavamox for two weeks and it didn't get better so I took her back and she again presribed the Clavamox for another 2 weeks.

So, by this time she was at the 6 month age and my mobile vet came out to spay her and that's when he diagnosed her with the inverted vulva and told me if it were his dog he would not spay her at this time.  He said if we were to spay her now she would still have issues with getting the UTIs and would probably require an expensive operation in the future to correct the inverted vulva.  He also said that the Clavamox seemed to be the antibiotic of choice by many vets and was very expensive.  He prescribed the Amoxicillin because he said that with this antibiotic it actually passes through their system and they urinate it out, therefore helping with any urine that might collect from the inverted vulva.

I will say that after a week of being on the amoxicillin things improved tremendously.  If I were you, I would see if you could get the vet to run a urinalysis and see if maybe she has a UTI and prescribe the amoxicillin.  I would also wait until she develops more or goes through her first heat before having her spay.

This thread did get hijacked lol. I have had Tucker on a more strict schedule and have been increasing the time in between letting him out at night. I just went back home over my lunch break after he'd been alone for about 6 hours (bad schedule today so no one else was home to let him out) and no mess. He came bolting out of the crate and ran straight to the door (impressive since he had to go up a flight of stairs and through 3 different rooms to get there) so it seems like he doesn't think it's OK to go in his crate like we originally thought. It was probably more of our fault for setting him up to fail. This isn't our first puppy bit it is our first GSP so it's a little different.
