My husband and I adopted an 8 month old GSP.  We will have had him two weeks this weekend.  The first week my husband was able to stay home with him for at least half of the day, however this week we have both been working.  I've been coming home at lunch each day to let him out and play. Usually when I get home for lunch his kennel is fine but when I come home in the evenings he has destroyed something...kennel mats, blankets, and most recently bent some of the metal bars on his kennel. Like some others have posted he cries like a big baby as soon as he is put up.  Im not sure what I should do about it.... I'm thinking about not coming home one day to see if that would help any.  At his previous home I believe he was left at most of the day as his Mom was at home with him and a 3 year old.  Any thoughts?

I am a firm believer in not having to come home at lunch... I believe it creates more anxiety or emotions... to a certain extent they can tell time but not really... so they really can't tell the difference of 4 hours or 8 hours... however they do realize I was just in this kennel barely had anytime out and now they are shoving me back in...plus I think when people come home at lunch they tend to talk and cuddle the pup some and give tons of attention and this is the stuff you don't want to do when you let a dog out of its kennel... when you let them out ignore them... just bring them outside for a potty without making any greeting don't say stuff like "hi baby" "mommy is home" you can simply say but not in an excited voice "lets go potty"... let them do their potty and then go inside and do what ever you got to do... don't make this the time to play and exercise do that after about 30 minutes of being out of the kennel...

I agree with Slat.  I do not have the ability to come home at lunch since it takes me about 40 minutes each way to go & come home from work. I do have one of the neighbor girls come over when she gets out of school and she lets them out in the afternoon. I had the same problem with my male when I adopted him at 10 months and he was not used to being kenneled.  He would bark, howl, bend the bars on his kennel, jump till he would push the bottom tray of his kennel half way out and sometimes he would pee in his kennel. I just persevered and eventually he got used to the routine.  He will actually go in the kennel on his own just to lie down now.  I think routine is key.  Every night I will get their kong and stuff it with pupcorn that I break up into pieces and mix it with peanut butter and I put it in the freezer.  In the morning when I get ready to go to work, I pull the kongs out of the freezer and Archer is already in his kennel waiting. It probably took him about 3 weeks to get used to the routine and stop fussing.  Don't give up - it gets easier!

Today I didn't come home at lunch and he appeared to do much better. Thanks for the advice. I know once he gets into a routine things will be easier for him on knowing what to expect. It's a big adjustment for each of us but I know we will succeed with time.

Routines are the secret to owning shorthairs. They love them. Also at 8 months old he is just like a teenager and trying to figure out who he is and testing boundaries. Couple that with a new home and you can begin to understand what is going on in his shorthair brain. Just be patient and things will work out. Also, don't be afraid to try different things if your first try isn't successful. God luck, and gad to hear things went better today.

Although my dog is a mix, I totally agree that routine is essential.
Also my memory of him at 8 months is filled with visions of a very high strung dog with absolutely endless energy. IMO you are at the hardest part it will only get better and better
