Rigby is 8 months old. We've had him since 8 weeks. He's been checked by the vet and he was neutered at 6 months but he still continues to pee in the house and in his crate. Please don't give me advice on crate training; I know how to crate train and have successfully crate trained multiple dogs in the past. Rigby can concentrate his urine and can hold his bladder for 8 - 10 hours overnight. He can also go outside and pee in the house or his crate within 10 minutes of coming back inside. His crate is not too large and I should own stock in Nature's Miracle. I am highly attuned to the signs of when he needs to pee and take him outside but I live on the fifth floor and he will basically leave a trail of pee the entire way down the stairs. It's not practical for me to carry a 50 lbs dog down the stairs but I've considered it. We probably go outside 6 times just in the evening alone. On a weekend we might go outside 10, 15, or 20 times.

I need help. Desperately. This isn't working and I love the dog but something has to give.

Hi and welcome.

Here's my 2 cents worth -

1) lessen his water intake and if he gets a can food either cut it out of his diet or reduce the amount
2) he may be doing this out of anxiety
3) it may be his way of telling you "hey, you ignorned me too long

Here's my cure - clean the crate and home with Nature's Miracle, reduce water intake and walk every 3 hours, even overnight.
If work interfers with this schedule then give a few ounces of water after his walk and then leave the house. When you get back walk him immediately and give water then begin the every 3 hours schedule.
What you may not be aware of is that it may take him a longer time to empty his bladder. I don't end a walk until my boys' pee stream is weak and sometimes not until they lift their leg and nothing comes out.

I know it's frustrating. He has probably become accustome to the "routine" of his pee schedule. This can be fixed but may take until he is over 2 years old.

Don't give up, don't get angry.
it's as much your fault as it is his.

He only gets dry food and his water is also being rationed already. I know a lot of people disagree with that practice but he does not seem to moderate his water intake and does overdrink. I kind of laughed at your suggestion of taking him out every 3 hours. At one point we were taking him out every 7 minutes (I literally set a timer) and we still had accidents. He is crated during the day while at work but never for more than 4 hours at a time and he's generally fine during these times. While I'm home and he's out of the crate he goes out every 60-90 minutes on average. He never pees more than once outside unless we are out for more than 30 minutes. He does not lift his leg and has not marked the way other male dogs I've owned have marked. Behaviorally he seems to understand he isn't supposed to urinate; when he's outside in his spot he stays in one spot. Inside he will walk around or lie down to pee. Once while walking outside to pee he rolled onto his back and peed - mostly all over himself. The only negative response he's ever been given is a loud "NO!" and only when he's caught in the act. He does not seem over anxious or insecure. His fear phases were significantly diminished compared to other dogs I've owned/seen. His disposition on the whole is fantastic and there don't seem to be signs of larger underlying behavioral issues.

At this point I'm going back to the vet for a larger battery of tests.

If he is only peeing once outside he needs to go more than once... not sure what you would need to do to get him to do that since you mention he goes once unless out for 30 minutes or more... maybe you need a ball and play time outside while on potty walks... if he lays down to pee when inside I am thinking it is more of an excited or nervous pee possibly...

Pixie isn't suggesting you take him out every three hours she is suggesting you take a walk. Big difference. Smells on a walk should entice him to go more often so he can fully empty his bladder. My first thought also in reading he was taken out every seen minutes is why in the world would he bother emptying himself when he knows he will be headed out again very shortly. There is a huge chance rather than learning to fully go outside an hold and control his bladder, he had learned the complete opposite (especially if he does ok during being kenneled in which he knows he will be there awhile). If he goes more than once if outside for more than half an hour, stay outside for more than half an hour (I.e. the walks already suggested).

I hate to sound harsh as I know you are frustrated, but your posts read as though you want advise, but that you also don't because you know what you're doing and just want a quick fix cure. You may also want to consider how your emotions, anxiety and frustration, may be effecting him too. Unintentionally you could be making him very anxious and frustrated as well. And the behavior could be a result of anxiety as already mentioned. Again, I'm not tryin to be harsh. Hang in there. 8 months is still young yet, you may not want to due to his age and expectations of where he should be due to his age, but you may need to take things back to te basics and treat him as you would a new pup in training. Walks, outs during the night, heavy praise for appropriately going outdoors, and ignoring the mistakes.

Ultimately, the issues lead back to his genetics.
I see a temperment issue and a bladder issue.
I also see an issue with the owner(s).

Let's also not forget that this is a male - sorry all you guys out there - anyone who has raised a boy knows they wait till the last minute, usually go in the pants and are more of a struggle to potty train - on a whole.

Boy dogs are not much different.

I have no reason as to why a dog would need to pee every 7 minutes or even every 2 hours at 8 months old.
Reasons that come to mind -
just b/c they pee doesn't mean the bladder is empty
water intake is enough to 'go thru him' - reduce more as long as he is not going to dehydrate
what color is the urine
walk him don't take him out for a pee
how much exercise does he get
what kind of exercise
does he give any sign of wanting to go out
I am sure any signs are being missed and he may not give signs each time - it will depend on how bad he needs to go

I am sorry for your trouble with this
and even more so for your dog
trust me - he doesn't want to do this and it's not good for his psyche
