and he took off and pointed them without much trailing - he did go back afterward and check out the scent trail.

I tried it two different ways

1) I dragged the wings and placed them. Then waited 45" to release the hound

2) I dragged the wings and placed them. Then released the hounds

Behavior was exactly the same and he in no way saw me  and I didn't take a straight path to or from where the wings were

Now what? :)

I DO like him!

It would be good if you could use the entire bird or a rabbit.
This would be easier for you to challenge him and he would benefit more from the task.

In light of that - drag the wings through tall grass even better woods, but not thick, thorny, yucky stuff, make the drag about 900 feet with 2 blunt turns.
Before you drag them pull one or 2 feathers out to mark the track for him.
Get him from his "hiding" spot, down him with his nose to the feathers, unhook him, when YOU feel calm release him - he should also retrieve them back to you.

Work your way up to this.
It's a lot of FUN!!!! for both us and the dog.

I am full of ways to challenge dogs.
Just let me know what you need.

will look to try that next week - off to the beach this weekend :) I'll have to think about a good place too as being in the south everything is growing quickly so my normal woods and fields are rough.

Next time he catches a rabbit I'll see if I can keep it whole - he enjoys rabbit ;)
As do the local fox population so they are fairly rare now

BTW he always retrieves whatever it is. I have worked earnestly at having him hold (whoa) and then retrieve after I send him (usually I will have him hold through me shooting a blank or air rifle (without pellet) and then tossing the item) THEN he can retrieve.
LOL I am simple and I know it but I try :)

Reading this is just too cute... Bugsy has too much character, LOL! and Pixies's I DO like him is cute too!

I really need to do more of this type of work with mine... when we have done it in the past when I had wings they just took off running in the field like crazed maniacs, they like to run...they didn't have any interest in the wing search...so I really need to go back to basics and probably let them get the crazies out first too...chores for the kids this summer I guess!

Nothing wrong with keeping it simple( IMO)

Thanks Chris, I am old enough that I don't mind being simple lol
I wish I could properly hunt him but I don't have the avenues for that - at the level we are. I keep trying to find someone to hunt with but it isn't done here outside of preserves that are fairly $$

I wouldn't say that's simple.
What you can do:
use dummy/bumper:
buy around 6,place them in a pile(not really a pile, scatter them a bit), identify the pile by throwing one into it,you're only about 5' away from the pile, then send him, with each send YOU back up a bit.The goal, over time, is to have him go in the line you sent him and around 150',more if you like.
Then you will make 2 pile 180 degrees, begin teaching the same way you taught the single pile. Then you make 3 piles, with one pile between the 2.

Then, along the lines you were talking about above - you are doing single marks - do doubles, even triples.
Teach him to take the cast to the dummy you sent him to.
Sounds easy, but these drills can become frustrating if not taught correctly.
Correctly means - simplify and increase as the dog masters each step,go back and simplfy when dog screws up.
Firing a capgun is a great distraction.
I like to do a waiting drill.
I throw, fire and we wait, sometimes 5 minutes before I send a dog, sometime I pick them up.
Simple is good.

worked with a dummy pile - with the added obstacle of an agility hurdle  - this morning

He did really well!

I brought along one of his bumpers that has had wings on it (note HAD) and used that as his reward for doing as asked and retrieving the boring plastic bumpers.

Being sent to find the bird-flavored dummy made him very happy
