Quick question....

Ghita is normally an excellent retriever retreiving dummies from water and cover to hand without any problem. She has started retrieving birds...guinea fowl, and francolin to hand. But suddenly as of last weekend she is refusing to retrieve. And when she does, she drops it before giving to hand.

Not sure what to? Any advice!

Is Ghita refusing to go when sent?
Have you taught a trained HOLD?
She is only a year old - could be a bit of a rebellion going on.

I agree with Pixie. A trained Hold that is enforced with birds can clean-up the retrieve. I am doing the same with Sadie (around the same age) with live birds now. Last Saturday was the first she was really demonstrating ability to fetch live birds, but she was dropping them in front of me, or at my feet. I would pick up the bird and stuff it back in her mouth and command "HOLD!". By the end of the hunt she was carrying around the birds until I took them from her.

If you haven't started training a hold, or trained retrieve, be aware it can be a long (months) process. If it is rebellion, however, better to nip it in the bud. Your pup will be better for it!

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

It probably is a rebellion, she has been trained to retrieve. She goes when I send her with the FETCH command, but drops it before delivering to hand.

I did some training with the dummy again yesterday, and she retrieved beautifully, holding it untill I give the release command. I havent tried her on birds again yet.... Might give it a go again on the weekend.

And thanx I'll definately try holding the bird in her mouth again.... 2 steps back....1 step forward.....

Luckily its not hunting season here.....so I have about 3 months before the season opens.
