Hi all - I've wanted to get a GSP for the better part of a decade to serve as a hiking buddy/all around dog and finally took the plunge with Rudiger, a ~2yo rescue dog.

He's still in his first week with my family and there have been a few instances where he initiates a gentle, almost purr when being petted on a couch/bed. If petting continues he'll escalate the tone and growl. One time he reached back quickly and put his mouth around my arm with virtually no pressure, but he definitely seemed irritated. When I stopped petting his shoulder he promptly got up, turned around and nestled up to rest on my leg. He usually doesn't react that way again if petted shortly after it occurs, unless you hug him which seems to make him uncomfortable.

Another instance of growling was on my bed and my 13yo english black lab female hopped up, he growled at her. She very rarely jumps up on the bed but seems to be more interested now that Rudi is a regular fixture on the furniture.

This is the only area of his behavior that has been of concern as he gets considerable exercise, comes when called, is very well behaved off leash in unfenced areas (with Layla my lab and toys/treats to keep him engaged) and spends a lot of time wagging his tail and being affectionate towards me and playful with Layla.

I'm looking for guidance on how seriously this behavior should be taken on my end and the best course of action going forward. My hunch is that he was treated poorly at some point, is just not used to a lot of affection or needs time to adjust to living with another dog. At the upper end of the spectrum I'm thinking he needs to be carefully trained/taught that he is not in charge and that he needs to act appropriately in the house.

To work on the dominance issue I've been running him on a front point harness to keep him level or behind, ensuring he sits prior to getting any food or treats, etc.

Sorry for the wall of text, hopefully this is the right amount of information for you to make informed comments.

I would keep him off the furniture and especially the bed. He is probably unsure of where he fits in the pack right now and that is giving him a since of importance. The hugging, well there are allot of dogs that are uncomfortable with that, so I would resist doing that for now. Remember he just arrived and it can take a month of so for them to get comfortable in their new home. So give him space and time to adjust. As for the petting, if he starts the growl stop, leave him be, and ignore the behavior. My guess is with time and adjustment all of this will improve. Don't put to much pressure on him right now as he is figuring out his new home. Training is good and helps with bonding, exercise and playing or good too. Patience and consistency and a good routine will go along way.

No couch and bed rule is in effect. Rudi isn't a fan of it and he gave a little growl the third time I got him off the couch. After firming up my voice and giving him a light pull on the shoulder he came down and curled up on his new dog bed.

Thanks for the advice, he definitely has a little dominance issue that needs to be addressed.

Tonight was the first night he was given the option to go out and run in the yard around 8pm and he opted to stay inside. It's good to see him finding his exercise/rest balance . He was really good today at sitting, shaking and running at my side. Here he is with Layla:

Took Rudi out for a weekend of winter camping. He was off leash in a wooded area for the better part of two days, stayed within 100 yards about the whole time, dug about 50 holes under tree stumps and fallen logs, and wasn't bothered by a variety of gunshots ranging from .22 to .50 rifles and shotguns.

He's warming up quickly to the family and has been compliant with getting bathed, having his paws cleaned and trips into town to the pet store. His discipline is improving each day with a very positive training regimen of treats and encouragement for listening to commands. He loves making new friends, canine and human.

After a few days he's learning to stay off his favorite couch and is perfectly happy to sleep in his crate and in the laundry room when unattended. Couldn't be happier with his response to training and eagerness to learn the "rules of the pack". Now if I can only get him to add a few pounds to get to 60-65lbs he'll be in great physical shape. He runs tirelessly and is eating ~5.5 - 6 cups a day plus several veggie treats. He might need to go up to 7 cups in order to get to a healthy weight, we'll see how it goes.

Anyone else have to feed more than 6 cups/day in order to put healthy weight on a GSP? Rudi is a good sized male recovering from pneumonia in November where he was close to not making it. He's up to 52lbs now but is still bony.

Here he is sitting for grandma:

What are you feeding him? You may have to go to a higher protein and fat content. That is allot of food. My male who is about 65 lbs eats about 3 cups of food a day, but it is high protein and fat.

Blue Buffalo fish and sweet potato. His foster mom noted that he can get the runs so I try to keep him on food with sweet potato, rice or oatmeal to keep his digestion healthy. He was extremely active the first few days and he gets 5 or so hours per day outside running around or on runs/playing fetch so activity wise he is out and about a lot.

I am sure that you are already doing this, but, just make sure to break his meals up. Most any dog will get loose stool with that much kibble in one meal. Mine get about 4.5 cups in 2 meals of 30% protein/20%fat food. I learned this after trial and error and bouts of diarrhea from too much in one meal. All the food just ran right through!

His feeding schedule is 3x per day so he's getting ~2 cups per meal. I checked the %es and his food is 20% protein 12% fat.

That is not a very high protein content at all....but blue buffalo has good food...but I bet they have a different mix with more protein....

3x is a good amount for feeding that much food....I couldn't get Striker to gain any weight even with satin balls and extra human type foods like egg yogurt ground beef, chicken breast....it just made his stools runny....then I thought to myself the feeding guidelines on dog food is really to maintain weight....so I bump him up to 7 cups a dog food a day....3 morning, 1 afternoon, 3 evening....he put on weight with in 1 week and after 2 weeks is looking good...I have been doing it for about 2 months now...I am now gonna try to lower the amount per feedings so he maintains and doesn't keep gaining....but I have him on a 26% protein (I have tried a lot of really good brand dog foods but I am now on Pro Plan large breed or performance which ever they have in stock)...

Understood, thanks for the comments. I'm going to transition him to Wilderness Duck (BB) for the near future. It's a lot more protein and fat rich than the current food (34% protein, 15% fat). Fingers crossed!

IMO,
34 is too high and 15 is on the low side.
can you find a 30/20 ratio?

Purina Pro Plan Performance is 30/20. Was hoping to stay with the same brand for the moment, maybe I'll pick some up on the way home.

From days of weight training, excess protein was never a bad thing per say, it just wasn't utilized. I'm guessing it could make Rudi's stomach less settled though.

I just switched about 2 months ago to Purina Pro Plan Performance and have been very pleased with the results so far.

It's what we use.
With the weight circles and sales we can get it at $40.

pixie - That was one of the reasons I switched. With 4 dogs the savings adds up fast. Also, my previous dog food didn't use any kind of preservative and I got a couple of bad bags, so was not really happy about that. When I looked for something with similar protein/fat the PP Performance seemed as good or better than most. The best part is it has reduced the amount of poop even more. So far so good.

Petco had it on sale last Sunday (so I'm sure it is continueing this week)$7 off- bringing it to $40 and with a $7 circle check (which I have no more at this time) it would have brought the bag down even more.
I have a $5 proplan coupon from petsmart -I'll combine that with the $7 circle check and maybe, just maybe they will be having a sale, too.
My dogs eat a bag a month.
Bev, have you checked into buying by the pallet?

Francine - If I had a good way to store it without the vermin (dogs and mice) from getting into it I would. I buy from Petco too most of the time because it seems it is always on sale and I get free shipping with the $$ I spend with them.
