i have one dog getting another pup in the spring. one of the club members told that the first year of hunting and training you should hunt them alone so they learn to hunt better. Is this true. It seems to me that the pup would learn from the older dog.

In my novice experience I have been training my two dogs separately but hunting them together. This has worked out ok...not great. They work well as a team BUT there is competition when the bird flushes. They are steady when they are alone...when they are together the wagering begins as to who will win the foot and nose race. This is something we have been working on the past couple of weeks. I have heard the very same advice that you received....I think you kinda have to feel it out. See how your dogs do. I all about letting the dogs be dogs...I'm just here to give guidance to how I want it done.
