I am the proud new owner of a male 7 week year old GSP puppy. I have had Bowden for a week now. I know this is earlier than usual but the breeder assured me it would not be a problem.
We have started Bowden on Kennel training, at night, and some during the day. He absolutely hates the idrea of being locked in the kennel. I have a large very large wire crate, and was wondering if he should have something smaller? At night, I usually let him fall to sleep on the couch and then put him in for ythe night. He will start whining about 2 hours later, I take him out and then put him back in, but have to sit there and pet him to fall asleep. I do not want to be judged as a bad owner but want to make sure I am doing everything right.
I have also started to work with him on basic commands: sit stay, etc. But he does not seem to have to much attention span for this? Again i just want pointers to make sure I am doing everything correct.

Oh Jason - you are a BAD owner. Taking him out when he crys,petting him until he falls asleep - spoiling him to the bone.
Shame on you!
You're doing great with him!
I don't know what the dimensions are but a smaller crate would probably make it feel more den like,you know - cozy. MAybe you can partition the back and then remove it when he grows.
I have been known to lay next to a puppy at night so they keep quiet - I'd rather deal with a puppy than a 2 legged,cranky kid.It's much easier to bribe a puppy.
Fun teaching commands is Ok -have you looked into clicker trining or Michael Ellis?
IS Bowdan strictly a pet or do you have goals for hunting,agility,etc.?

The crate is probably 4' x 3'. People have told me that I should move the crate from my room and just let him cry it out, is this right?
I have not looked in either of those training methods yet, but I will look into it. I also hope to have Bowden involved in hunting quail, and retrieving dove. Should I be getting satarted on this? |

| First, all my puppies start in crates about that size right next to my bed. You can make the crate smaller by partitioning off part of it. I would also cover it as that will make it warmer and more den like. I do exactly what you do with the puppy at night. I usually watch some TV and pet them while they fall asleep and then lights out for me too. The thing you want to be careful of is never let him out when he is crying (this does not count when they wake you up and need to go out, but is when they are crying just wanting out). Wait until he is quiet before you let him out. Otherwise, you are doing a great job with your puppy. If you don't have things he can snuggle with in the crate you might consider getting a puppy size stuffed animal and some blankets too. yes. You guys need to be out,if weather permits for his age, encouraging cooperation,developing search,boldness and independence. Playing play fetch for now,on a lead,encouraging him to come back to you with his prize.

| That means he looks like he is going to challenge you and make your life interesting. It is just the gleam in his eye and the look on his face. He is adorable, but that attitude is shining through. I love dogs like that. |

Pixie Bee- Yes I have but I live in the Northwest Tip of Florida (Pensacola) and the closest chapters are in Central Florida and Northern Georgia both over 8 hours away.
Texas Belle- He definitely has a wild drive, but is very smart. I taught him sit and down in about twenty minutes without very much trouble at all. (not bad for a 7 week old) I hope to focus all that energy into a positive way. |

welcome...cute little guy you got there...
I keep the cages in my room at night, but I don't give in if they are crying for attention and wanting out...I usually put the pup in the cage and then I sit in beds with the lights on reading or watching TV till the pup tires out...so before going in the cage they go potty, then I play with them and tire them out and then another potty and the cage... |

| My GSP pup at 7weeks when I brought her home started out in the kennel. I woke up with her in the bed. She has slept in the bed ever since, damn fiance! LOL. Her house training is going good, very few accidents in the house. The only time we kennel her is if we leave for a long time. any other time I take her out when she wakes up, after she plays, after she eats, anytime she looks like she is about to go. Lot of work having a pup. |
