I come here as a novice gun dog trainer with what I deem to be a well mannered and obedient, yet, very high strung bird dog (2.5yo GSP).  She has her issues due to high energy levels but she's a good house dog, obedient in the yard and a machine in the field.  All of her training obedience/hunting has been home schooled.

Fast forward to my other dog, a 3yo maltese/shihtzu mix (wife's dog).  I despise this dog lately.  Like many small dogs he has a lot of obedience issues, doesn't listen, jumps on people when they come in the house, needy lap dog, etc.  I never did any training with this dog.

To my problem.  He's housetrained, has been since 16 weeks old or so.  Lately (the past year probably) he gets up in the middle of the night and pees in the hallway, or on the shower mat, or in my son's room.  He hold's it all day (8 hours) while we're at work.  We pull the water at 7 or 730, he gets a half mile walk at 10 and then to bed.  Probably every other night I find a pee spot the next morning.  I'm lost, not even sure how to address this problem.  Suggestions, comments, ideas?

Could be several things.
First, could it be his breeding? I know many small dogs bought from back yard breeders and pet stores with this issue.
Then there is the possibility that it has to do with him hitting about 2 years old, showing the terrible twos and no one stepping up with obedience to claim the leader role.
It could also be marking due to your other dog.
And lastly, are you sure it is the small dog peeing?

In any case, basic obedience is probably a good idea.

I would rule out health issues first. Then if that is ok, I would start crating him at night. That should fix the problem. Also, be sure you clean up the area where he pees with something that will kill the smell.

It's definitely his breeding, he's one of those dogs that is bred to look pretty and that's it. They don't pay attention to the the traits that we like in gun dogs, obedience dogs, etc. They breed and sell to make money and that's it. They look cute and cuddly and people buy them. That being said, it's still my dog and my responsibility and I fully accept that.

He checked out clean at the vet about 2 months ago and this has been going on longer than that. My GSP sleeps in a huge crate so it's not her. In my opinion it is his screw you attitude. He accepts my GSP as his alpha who accepts me as hers. He's at the bottom of the food chain in our home. My GSP is a female so I'm not sure if he'd be marking b/c of her.

I like the crating idea, it was actually what I was thinking. I always clean it up, but for one it's gross and I'm sick of cleaning it up, and two it made me mad but it was 20 year old construction grade carpet so it wasn't as big of a deal. The driver for my need to fix this is that I want to replace my carpet and don't want to deal with a peeing dog.
