Would these be quail that I could use for the dogs...just so they can see and smell birds and we can work some hunting type training...

They would be OK.

They should be ok, but I would ask how they were raised. If they were raised in a flight pin they will be better fliers as opposed to if they are raised in a small bird pin. It they aren't good fliers then you need to know it as you really don't want your dogs to learn to catch birds. You can compensate with a check cord on your dogs and not let them get close enough to catch, or if you know how you could use a launcher. Just don't want to create an problem with your pups unnecessarily. Speaking from one who learned the hard way. ; )

I will add to what the others have said. I have used coturnix quail for training, but they are not the best flyers. (It just so happends that there is a Amish guy that sells them for under $2 per, and if I am in the neighborhood I will pick them up for frozen bird stock.) If you have a choice of Bobwhite or Coturnix....Bobwhite all the way. They may be a bit more expensive, but are more explosive when flushing. (Both are stunning trussed on a plate!)

Also make sure you check into getting your gamebreeders license....You know the State of Illinios must be paid tribute for EVERYTHING you do. :)

I have raised Bob-Whites for training but thats because it was the way I was introduced. After meeting a local gamebird breeder who only had Coturnix he told me that he never sold any bob-whites because he didn't have them. I loaded him up with eggs from my birds and now he does have bob-whites available. Reason I mention this is for years local dog guy's were buying his coturnix's for training.

I like the bob-whites because I release them and can catch them in a recall pen and then they become real good flyers ! If you have the space to pen raise your own birds it is fun and rewarding. ( No money saved doing it this way) But a lot of fun !
