thanks for the advise. I have subsequently met a seasoned trainer over the past few days and in exchange for some consulting work (i am a forester) he is going to help me with my dog. I met him through a good friend and he came highly recommended. I am hoping that my time spent with him will not only help train the dog, but train me as well.

In regards to getting on birds, i am trying... Its a hard time of year. Here is a question, in your opinion do they have to be bobwhites? I have found pharoah and mexican quail just not bobs. what do you think? is  it worth the purchase?

I believe Pharoah and Coturnix are the same species. I guess it depends on cost and if they are flight conditioned. The species of quail has little to do with their effectiveness for training, but their ability to escape if pressured. If these are "meat" birds then I am guessing they are not well flight conditioned and jumpy. But, if so, then you'll be fine with them. If they run over $5 then they're too expensive, stick with pigeons. I would suggest getting more birds, building a small coop, using them, and continuing your search for hard flying pen quail of some sort.

Just curious what type birds you would be hunting. Since you live in Virginia I would say the woodcock should be there now. I don't know what your local game laws allow but if it's alright to train this time of year I would reccomend getting him on some wild birds. You might catch some flights which could help. How is the woodcock cover by where you live? Be sure to check your local game laws. It sounds good that you may have someone who will help you thats great ! also when looking to purchase gamebirds for training try this website:
http://www.mynaga.org/
They list people that sell quail in all states. May be helpful.

Thanks Max, that is really good information. I will check that site out. As for woodcock in the area, we have a few but finding them is tricky. I am on it though! thanks again.

I have another bit of info plus if you become a member they do a lot of good. It's the Ruffed Grouse Society check this site. They have a woodcock migration map and it tells you when the birds are in your area.( As long as someone tells the site)
A lot of good information about the birds habitat and such. You being a forester have an edge already. Good Luck & enjoy ! The other site I posted may show you that you have a gamebird grower in your area.
