I must be missing something cuz to me the stay and whoa are pretty much the same thing...what is the difference between them? I know the dog should stand for the whoa but I tell my dogs to stand and stay....

Splat it is pretty much the same as the walking stand/stay in obedience. For me whoa means stop and stand where you are until I release you. I use the same command in obedience for the stand/stay and the walking stand. I use stand for getting the dog from a sit to a stand.

that makes sense and I have done the walking stand stay...I may even sometimes say whoa cuz of the whole horse thing...sometimes the dogs are walking next to me and I will drop my hand say whoa and then stay and they stand and wait for me to do whatever like open the gate and they wait till I call them....for the most part they do this well...they both actually are good at following commands even though I have not been working on them as much as I should... the other day the husband had them out front and joggers went by and the dogs saw them but my husband just called them (come) and they came without hesitation... I wasn't sure if with the whoa the dogs had to stand a certain way squared up or like in a point...
