Ok, I thought we could all contribute to a training timeline for all of the new members and current members with new pups, (I myself am included)
So here is what I thought, we could go through the puppy stages and suggest training that needs to be done during this timeline, example:
Weeks 7-9 Socilizing and Basic Obedience Commands
Weeks 9-12 Ect.
So if the members who have finished dogs, hunters, Field, Hunt Test & overall veterans of the breed can contribute I will put it all together and hopefully the admin can make this a sticky topic for everyone who needs it.
Thanks

At one time I had a timeline, then when I got into versatile hunting it all changed. For my dogs obedience - even if in a fun way - starts immediately. At the same time we are hopefully introducing blood tracking, scent tracking, retrieving, searching fields, woods and water, retrieving to hand. Formal obedience will begin around 4months old and the 'hold' will begin around 5 months old (closer to six months, tho) and force fetch at around 8 months old and continuing to proof FF until I get thru handling. Handling will also have begun at around 5 months old - left, right, back. Cooperation is encouraged throughout all this and is continued throughout the dog's life. I expect my dogs to be prepared for NAVHDA and NADKC puppy tests way before 12 months old and a must to be prepared for NADKC solms by 14 months old. I no longer believe in timelines. I believe in proper handling and exposure. Of course, proper breeding helps a whole bunch. Looking forward to reading other's training schedules Francine |

| Hmm, really don't use a timeline as each dog is different. I did start Halo's litter off using Pat Hasting's Puppy Development (behavioral development for puppies). I also mixed in things starting when they had their eyes open for hunting. Put wings in with the puppies at 3 weeks and also started shooting an air gun when they were eating about the same time. at 6 weeks they got to play with a live quail and again about a week later. At about 4 weeks I brought out the puppy agility stuff (baby teeter, baby dog walk/Aframe, and baby tunnel). They also got introduced to a huge variety of people, surfaces and locations. At about 7 weeks started doing some basic obedience games. At 4 weeks I started stacking them. From 8 weeks on lots of traveling, socialization, etc. At 4 months start the formal obedience, but my pups usually are already good with sit, down, stand, stay, heeling and the recall. At about 12 weeks started introducing them formally to birds and continue that training as well. I introduced my pups just this weekend to the gun and they are about 4.5 months now. The gun into went really fast because of the early noise work I did. I guess that is sort of a timeline, but again the age may vary depending on how the pups are doing. |

I use to follow timelines with my Labradors, with the pointing breeds I noticed not so much. Kind of a watch and act approach. My boy Creek was introduced to the gun during his third month and now at 4.5 months has seen 25 coveys of wild Chukar, a dozen or so Ruff Grouse approximately 15 coveys of California Valley Quail with multiple singles, doubles & triples tied in with the covey types. Weekly trips to train with launchers, and to date has seen probably a good fifty to seventy pigeons. A lot of runs/hikes with the intentions of getting into wild birds while keeping it fun. His "here" command needs some work which I believe is just a intro to a e-collar to help enforce the command. Retrieving is going well with limited sessions and not trying to over do. Retrieving of wild game is not there yet, we haven't made the transition to birds yet but were close. He does find a downed bird but is possesive and wants the bird for himself. Once we enforce the "here" command I'm sure it will not be a prob. He has also been introduced to water & we work with pigeons for tracking drills after the intial point/shoot. I'm takin my time with my first GSP and really have enjoyed not being on a timeline. Although after re-reading this post I may have made better progress without being on a timeline.

The only timeline... GET PUP OUT TO LEARN TO RANGE, HUNT, EXPLORE, LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD, TAKE PUP TO PARKS, PETSMART, FAMILY OUTINGS, CLOSELY MOWED FIELDS, CHASING PIGEONS, GET ON WILD BIRDS, SOCIALIZE, LEARN HERE AND HIS NAME-From day one until he's showing he's ready to be broke. Once he's hunting hard, pointing and naturally holding his birds, loves to retrieve, is ranging as big as I want, is bold and independent, and is relatively mentally mature, then break him carefully. Then, once broke, HUNT the heck out of him. Beyond those rules, just let him be a dog, be a pet, let the kids mess with him, and keep your mouth shut as much as possible. |
