So our 9 week old GSP pup is getting used to being at home with us now. He is really starting to devlop more and more each day. The issue I am having right now is trying to get him used to the kennel as he was not trained from the breeder. He is still wimpering/barking/crying at night but not as much. He will pee and poop in his kennel and it does not seem to bother him. Is there anything I can do to stop this or make him not want to go in there? I try to not keep him in his kennel to long but there are times during the day when both me and my wife are at work and cannot let him out. I think part of it may be due to the size of the kennel as we originally bought it for our Lab/Retriever but he did not take to it. It is a larg wire crate and I have read where they say to section it off. Has anyone had to do this and if so what did you use to do so? Also any suggestions on how to get him to stop going in the crate (he will sometimes go after being in there for only an hour or so and going out 3-4 times prior to having him go in the kennel)?

I partition off the large wire carte with an upside plastic milk crate. The puppy only should have enough room to stand up, turn around and sleep comfortably. They shouldn't be able to poop at one end of the crate and get far away from it. At 9 weeks, your puppy can hold "it" for 3 hours. If you're leaving him longer than that, there will be accidents in the crate!

Yeah, I figured while we were out there was no way to avoid him going in the crate. The wire crate is to large as I would probably need a couple of milk crates to keep him contained. I went ahead today and got one from Gander Mtn. that is more for his size and and enclosed kennel (like the vari, but made by remington). Does anyone have any experience with these kennels? Do they hold  up? should I get a different brand?

Thanks

I was lucky enough to get one given to me, but from my understanding the best ones are the ones made of plastic with the holes in the side on the top half. It creates more of a “den” and makes the dog feel more secure in his surroundings. The wire ones are too easy to see everything that is happening and makes them feel more trapped in a cage. I would get one that would fit him until he/she is full grown and just section it off. I think they are too expensive to be getting one every 2-3 months as to not cramp them.

As for your puppy not willing to go into his crate. He needs to learn to like his crate. I would check out this video.

Good luck!

We use the wire crate (size large) on our 10 month old GSP female. We have used the crate since we got her at 9 week of age, but it came with a wire partition that was adjustable to expand the crate in size as she grew. Not until she was about 8 months old did we have the crate at it's full size use. We quickly learned that even a few inches too big could make a big difference for her. We have always kept it at a size where she has just enough room to stand up and stretch and lay down comfortably (no extra room to walk to one side or the other).

Do you have the option to come home mid-day or have a dog walker come by and let her out and play for 30 mins or so? Our GSP was able to go accident-free by around 10 weeks of age for 4 hours at a time in the crate with a good 30 minute break in the middle of the day for some play-time and bathroom time. We also had to be sure to limit her water intake before she went back in the crate. Hope that helps!
