I am looking for a book that will help to guide me in the training steps with a new pup. I really want to do this right and I can see that some of the items i would train, like sit, should wait on. It would be nice to have a book that sates at week 9, you should train x and this is how to do it. Also, it would serve as a good guide as to what not to train. My good friends wife is a trainer, but i do not want to lean on her to know everything. I am looking for a guide so we are both on the same page. Is thier such a thing or did I stumble across a business opportunity for someone.

Plenty of books out there. I would recommend a video tho. Perfect Start and Perfect Finish. A visual is usually best if someone doesn't know what to look for in a dog. Also, videos often give more info that just can't be expressed within a written text.

Crangle, Wehle, and Delmar are all good. Delmar has several good puppy videos. Jon Hann with Perfection is a good trainer, although I haven't seen his video. I would highly suggest you spend the time to find a mentor, whether a good pro or good amateur to help you in person with hands on the dog. NOTHING will ever replace getting your hands on many many dogs and learning from a good trainer. There are many levels of trainers out there, from amateurs who know little, to amateurs who really know dogs and have trained many, to pros who don't know squat about pointing dogs. Just remember, if you take money you are defined as a pro. Doesn't mean you know something!!! Find a local pointing dog club, attend some events, get some references, most are willing to help a newbie get going. Most pros offer a lesson by lesson, train the dog and the owner, rate.

Jon Hann's video, Perfect Start and Perfect Finish is good. I used it when I first started, but I have to second what trueblu said about finding a mentor. I found a great pro who trains all pointing breeds, but owns shorthairs. He works with me and my shorthair and really knows and understands shorthairs. It was nice because my training background is obedience and his was field, but our methods and observations about shorthairs were absolutely in sync. My trainer I now count as a friend too which was an added bonus.

I have a great trainer/mentor all lined up. I just am gun shy of trusting one person at this time due to the situations I have been in over the last 2 weeks. I planned of buying the perfect start. I also have a book on GSP's that I have been reading on and off the last year, but it is vague at best on training. Thanks for the ideas!

If you're looking to train a hunting dog: http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Train-Your-Own-Bird/dp/0811723046 10 trainers, navhda, akc, and this is still the best advise I've found to date...best $20 anyone could spend... Read the chapters on the puppy period 10 times and you can't go wrong.

True Blue- Its just called introduction to German Shorthair Pointers. I have the same type of book about wiemaraners. DGR- I will check it out!
