How do you teach it?

Have you googled it?There's plentyof info on it.
First see if she does it naturally, even if she only backs for a second or 2.

pixie is right, they will back naturally. I got to witness that first hand with Ringo in the last HT. His bracemate was on a bird when he came around and as soon as he saw her he stopped cold. It only lasted for a few seconds because he knew there was a bird and that his bracemate was allot closer (the competition instinct took over at that point), but I did get to see his first back. It was really cool to watch.

I have never seen her back. She kinda slowed down once last weekend when Shane was on a point but I had to keep her there.

So could I just put her on a check cord and follow a training party out into the field, and whoa her every time another dog points?

Tessa - My guess is she just needs more time on birds and running in a brace. Ringo doesn't do it allot, but once in a while. After that one back I mentioned above the competition gene really kicked in and if he saw his bracemate on point he was right in there with her pointing the bird. I am not worried about that right now as we are just now starting to break him. The backing will come in time. The fact that there is even a hesitation though says the instinct is there. I know with my girls I see them back each other in the back yard. Even Ringo backs the girls and vice versa. So I know they have the genes for it. If you have seen a hesitation with Tessa she has it too.

When she was braced she never paid any attention to what the other dog did. If the field is big enough she is in her own world. Saturday the area we worked with was a little tighter, so they came across each other pointing.

These pictures were taken when the pups were about a year old. With the exception of their first bird work they have been in the training field together most of the time. Both have backed naturally since day one. The sooner you can start nurturing this the better.

Backing is one thing, expecting a dog to stand thru flush, shot and fall is all obedience.
Many people don't care if their dog is a natural backer b/c they have to train the sequence anyway.
A dog is not less b/c it does not back naturally.

He may be more...Earlier today I googled and came across an article by John Henry Walsh, written in 1906, and he writes:

"When [the dog] is to be hunted with other dogs he requires to be made "steady behind," that is to say, he must be taught to "back" another dog as the latter stands. In very high-bred dogs, this property is developed very early; but the more hardy and courageous the breed, the longer they generally are in acquiring it, and therefore the young breaker should not be discouraged if he finds that his puppies give him some trouble after they have learned to stand perfectly steady."

I am not too far from you. I am in Powder Springs, GA. Come out to my place one day and we can get her backing in a day. I have a backing dog, launchers, pigeons, etc. I really like the looks of your girl and would love to meet her anyway. Mark 770-826-4975
