So last night I started working on the stay and come comands more.  Blitz know is sit/stay ok cuz I make him do it in the driveway when I go get the mail sometimes.  Blitz also know come pretty good cuz we have not had a fenced in yard and he needed to learn that pretty quick.  When we moved I had to borrow and e-collar to help remind him of what come meant cuz he was to involved with discovering the new yard, but after a couple uses he was back to listening and we have stopped using the collar.  Donner really hasn't been taught anything but sit and wait for his food to be set down.  He comes when I call Blitz most of the time and if he doesn't we just call him useing happy voices and a squeaker toy.  I am about at the point to start using the check cord to teach him come.

Last night I was having both dogs sit and stay and I would walk around the corner and wait a second (making sure they stayed), I was also careful to only say sit once and stay once (this is hard!)...then I would tell them to come.  They did very good with this, a couple times I had to reset them and not say the command again.

Then I wanted to test Blitz.  So I had them both sit and stay.  Then I would call Donner by saying "Donner, Donner come" (my official come command is saying their name twice and then come), Donner would come (I had treats) Blitz would sometimes try to come so I would have to say "Ah-Ah!" and he would sit back down.  Then I would call Blitz to come.

My question is because everytime I said "come" both would want to come.  If you have multiple dogs do each get their own word like one gets "come" and the other gets "here"?  Or will they learn their name?  I know Texas Belle has mentioned training in front of each other starting with one in the kennel and then going from the kennel to a stay while workign the other dog....Do you ever get to where you work them both at the same time and they know when you are talking to them and not the other dog?  I have never had more than one dog so I just don't know what to expect or really do.  I know right now they are very young to expect them to know this well, and I was just seeing what Blitz listened to if it was his name or the command and it appears to be the command....

When I train together I have to use their name first and then the command. When I first introduce a dog to the team training, I usually start with the down because it is easier for them to be successful. I also stay in the same room (out of site stays I reserve until they are very solid on their commands as the out of site portion puts allot of pressure on a young dog). Once they get the hang of it they do very well, but the first few times I have to make a correction. My two oldest are experts at this game, but Ringo still lets his competitive nature show from time to time. I would not encourage doing this though until the dogs individually are very good and understand the exercise as it is very hard for them to succeed.

That gives me a good starting point!

I only went out of site on the stay and then called both of them together, not individually....I knew that wasn't gonna happen....

Right now Blitz seems to just come when he hears "come" even though I say "Blitz, Blitz come"....so I think we just need work on that...sort of like simon says, LOL!

I have not been able to get them to do down yet, sit is as good as it gets....so I guess more work on that!

This Spring and summer I will be busy!

How did you teach Blitz the come? Did you teach Blitz come or just come? If you taught just come he is doing it correctly and you need to teach the new command, Blitz come. If you taught Blitz come to begin with, then he is cheating on you and you need to correct him by putting him back in his sit. When you put two "siblings" in the mix they will get competitive and you have to have allot of patience with them.

I never used just come I have always used Blitz come...so I guess he is cheating...

I probably won't be doing commands with them together like that for a while since Donner really isn't anywhere near trained, but I just wanted to test and see what Blitz was listening to when he did come, so I could figure out what I needed to work on...I really don't think Blitz has figured out what Donner's name is or what his own name is, LOL!

When I would say Donner come if Blitz got up I would just walk over and push his butt back down cuz I didn't think I should tell him to sit and stay again cuz I didn't want to repeat the command, so I think I did that right. The tricky thing was getting Donner to come since we have not worked much on that yet, we only got him on the check cord this week and I probably should of had him on it while trying this training out, but I wasn't thinking and it was a spur of the moment thing!

So now I know I need to work on Blitz knowing the command as Blitz come and then I have to work with Donner on the check cord!

Put Donner in a crate and let him watch when you train Blitz. It is amazing how much they pick up from just watching. Sounds like you are doing good with the training. When you train if you need to reinforce a command it is ok. For instance, if you say sit and he doesn't then you make him sit and don't reissue the command. However, if he is sitting and after a while he stands up, I would go over to him and put him back in the original spat and tell him to sit and stay again. That just reinforces the command. What you don't want to do is say sit, sit, sit when you are trying to get him to sit.

With Donner as young as he is for the recall, you can just use a 5 or 6 foot leash. Put him in a sit and walk out to the end of the leash and turn and face him. The tell him come, give a little pop on the leash and run backwards. Be excited about it and you will get an enthusiastic recall. Once he is coming with enthusiasm and is also solid in his sit, then you can go to the check cord and be further away. I like the backing up from them as they love to idea of chase and it gets them moving toward you with more enthusiasm.
