I have a 8 mos old male GSP, He is in great shape endurance wise but I want to add some muscle on him to help during duck season. Can I accomplish this buy having him pull resisitance weight such as a chain with his roading harness.

I was thinking of starting at 20 lbs and work my way up as he gets stronger.

I'm not a fan of roading but if muscle and endurance for duck searches is what you want, one way to achieve this is by having your dog swim after ducks. You can tape the duck so it won't dive and have your dog search, find and chase. A dog will not catch a healthy duck. If you want at some point you can shoot the duck for a retrieve or you can work on calling your dog off. This method will give your dog what I call 'duck savy'.
I don't do this too much, what I do is many, many long distance bumper retrieves, mostly blinds.

I have used weight for older dogs, but free running for 30 minutes off a quad or biking 45 min to an hour is plenty for conditioning, I havent used weight in years & do very well in field trials, hunting and water work.
That said, I wouldn't put 20 lbs on a puppy....I wouldn't use weight at all that young personally. If you choose to, use metal plastic coated cabling and not chain, drags straighter, plenty heavy & doesn't catch up or whip around like chain can.
