In my opinion force fetch is just as important for an upland dog as it is for a waterfowl dog. Many times you'll drop a rooster in a cattail slough or tall grass that is higher then your head. When this happens if you don't have a dog that is has been properly trained to fetch there is a high probability you will lose the bird. Today there is no reason not to train the trained retrieve. There are videos, Gun Dog Mag.com, PDJ.com, retriever journal.com and a whole host of blogs to help you properly do this for little or no cost. Gun Dog Mag did an excellent article about what we can learn from waterfowlers. I'm sorry but I don't remember the issue but it dealt with properly training our pointers to seek and fetch downed birds. Waterfowlers lose remarkably few birds regardless of the cover they are hunting and we should strive to do the same.

Have to agree with oniel nothing worse than your dog dropping a live rooster at your feet when your not ready for it.

A dog shouldnt be steady by 2, a dog should be steady when its ready to be steady. How many birds has this dog seen, how many have been shot over it, I am guessing it has seen 1 season which is not enough. Get 2 or 3 seasons under its belt then start breaking him.

Dont confuse it though with being able to hold point until the bird flushes.

If you are hunting this dog then make sure the dog is bringing the dummy to hand everytime. You also dont want him to drop it until you say so but you can cover that in the trained retrieve. I would focus on a trained retrieve before breaking this dog.
