Has anyone had any experience using their GSP as a dock dog? I'm watching the way my pup jumps off things and he looks like he would be a natural. I've watched some competitions over the years and I don't recall ever seeing a GSP.

Beth (Moose on the forum) does dock diving with her girl, Phoenix. Also, one of the top dock diving dogs was a GSP named Seven.

I have not done dock diving, but we might try to get into it with our GSP....we watched an event over the summer and saw a couple GSP's doing it!

So I sent and email to Moose as she does dock diving with all her dogs. Hopefully, she will respond to your question.

Sorry for the delay in a reply guys. Is there certian information you all want in getting started? Or are you looking for training ideas?

During the winter months get a toy that your dog loves and just play play play with that toy in the yard and where ever else you want. Create that driver for that toy.

We have found that having a dog who is water and toy driven to be the one to help introduce the new dog to the sports works great. If the dog has toy drive (the new dog) and sees antoher go after their toy they will more than likely go in and start swimming. If you don't have a second dog to help motivate focus on making that drive for the toy so intense that nothing can come between the toy and the dog. Then once swimming is able to be done in the lake/pond just start off from the ground putting the toy where the dog can reach it while it touches and move it slowly out further til they have to swim. Just keep moving it further and further.

TAKE YOUR TIME though. You want the dog to have the drive for that toy and if you push too fast it can make the dog say screw it and not care. Once they are doing well with entrance from the ground find a way to have the dog have to enter from a 2 foot high dock. Once again this has to start with a short toss and move it further and further.

Let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer. Hope this is a good starting point. Work has been busy this week so havnt' been able to take a lot of time to go in depth. I will try my best to get more detailed later! :0)

I take Barley to the dog beach in the summer atleast 3 to 4 times a week! Barley took to the water immediately and started jumping off the dock within the first week of being introduced to the water. I have not gotten him into any competitions but he sure gets a lot of spectators when we are out there! His dock jumping toy is a simple bumper but he goes nuts over it and simply cannot stop!

Even if you never compete this is THE BEST way I have found to wipe Barley out. Simply put when we spend an hour at the dock Barley is so drained once we get home he hardly gets up to eat dinner! I know we all try to find new ways to wipe these guys out and I think this is the best I have found yet!

Hey everyone,

I haven't been on the board in awhile, juggling a 2 year old, work, and a GSP puppy & Seven has kept us busy!!! But Seven does still regularly competes in Dock Diving events all over the country. He isn't jumping as far as he did before his back injury, but he still hits 25 feet regularly :-) Anyway we started Seven when he was about 3 only because that was the first local event as we are on the east coast. Ever since then we are addicted and have traveled all over the US!!

My advice in getting started is to just go to an event and give it a try, not all dogs take to it right away, but some do...As for not jumping in the water that's an easy one the water in the pools in clear and dogs that are not used to pool water literally don't know that there is water there...I would suggest having someone standing next to the pool splashing the surface a little so the dog can see the water...otherwise start in a pond or lake. The biggest part of dock diving is TOY DRIVE!!!! Let me know if you have any questions.

Good Luck & Have Fun
