I'm another new owner at my wits end with piddling in the house. He is 12 weeks and I just don't understand why he doesn't get it. He is very smart, knows sit, knows no, can even retrieve toys by name.

I take him out and he'll go til he can't go anymore (squat and still try, as he also knows go potty). We come back in and 15 minutes later he's piddling in the house. I pick him up and take him out again but same thing 15 minutes later. He did test positive for a small amount of bacteria in his urine a couple weeks ago and was given an antibiotic. I still don't see any change in his behavior though so I'm not sure that was causing him any problem. He is crated at night and will not wake us to go out for 6-8 hours so I don't believe there's a problem being able to hold it.

Help, any advice will be appreciated. I've owned GSPs before but never had one as a small puppy. I never had a problem training weimaraners from pups.

Thanks, Dani

Hi and welcome.

What you are experiencing has nothing to do with intelligence. It is about physical development. If he is peeing every 15 minutes, tho I would be concerned.
One thing I do know, once does not mean done. Often they do not empty their bladder,b/c they are young and even tho they have 'gone' it doesn't mean they are emptied.
I wouldthink giving him a 1/2 hour or more of 'go' time a few times a day may make a difference in your sanity.

Hey there!

I'm definitely no pro, but I've been reading up on potty training lately so I'll try to help you out with what I've found out. If anyone sees anything I post here as inacurate, please feel free to correct it.

I just got a GSP pup myself and she's been great with potty training. I'm here most of the day (I'm a student and writing my master's, so I work from home all the time), so I walk her out every hour or two, and always bring her to the same spot. She's got her little habit. But for the times when I bring her out and she doesn't even try to pee, I do the following thing: I put her in her crate and try again 30 minutes later. She doesn't like to pee where she sleeps, and so she keeps it in, probably thinking to herself she should have gone when she had a chance. When I bring her out next, she pees, gets a reward, and gets to be free in the house (but always under my supervision).

The thing is, like pixie bee said, the "15 minute" thing does sound kinda strange. My pup is only 10 weeks old and holds it in for up to 2.5 hours. If your pup had a UTI or a bladder infection, chances are it hasn't cleared up yet, and a trip to the vet may be in order.

Best of luck!

I agree with Pixie. At 12 weeks my male was still having accidents. I think he was closer to 16 weeks before the he really was consistent. That said try to anticipate his need (after eating, playing and sleeping) and put him out. Keep him out long enough to really go. Boys are especially bad about going and then a few minutes later needing to go again. Keep him close and under your watchful eye when he is inside and if he looks like he is going to potty grab him and take him out. Praise him when he goes outside and don't make a big deal if he potties inside unless you catch him in the act, then tell him no and pick him up and put him outside.

Also, clean up the places he has gone with something that will kill the smell. There are lots of good products on the market either in grocery stores or pet stores.

Most of all be consistent and don't get frustrated. He will get there. Remember he is a baby and has a small bladder that he is learning to control.

My male pup when outside would pee every 10-15 minutes pretty much no matter how long we were outside...However when letting him out to just go potty and not play I would make sure he stayed out 30 minutes...then when he came inside I would keep my eye on him and stayed close, some people keep a leash on the pup even inside to do this. If he started to go potty I scooped him up in the act and put him outside. Never yelled at him just said no picked him up and moved him outside, he would finish outside and I praised him and gave him a treat. I only had to do that 2 times and he got the idea of going outside and not inside.

my gsp just turned 4 months. We have far less accidents but if he is excited or something he has accidents..... Wow, just now as im writing this he has a accident right behind me. Thing is with my dog, he can't stand to stay out side. He goes potty then he wants back in. If he is out there 5 minutes that is a record for me. What can I do to make him like it outside? Its like 40 degrees out. think that is the problem?

Thanks all for the replies. I guess I already knew all that but it's good to have the reinforcement. I did notice quite a difference in the past week. I do believe that his bladder infection did play a role in him "holding" it. We are still working on that but there are alot less incidents now. He whines at the door when he has to poop which is a real good thing. Right now weather is also a problem for me. I take him out and he'll go quickly then want to come right back in. Even on his walks he's shaking after just a couple blocks. We are in the far north so we can't avoid freezing temps.

And, you ought to see me at 5am out in the back yard in my jammies holding a golf umbrella over him when it's raining (he absolutely hates the rain). It's quite the sight.

What we do for our dogs. As for cold temps, at 4 months puppies still are developing and have a hard time regulating body temperature. You guys in the far north may have to get coats for the puppies until they are a bit older. After they are adults, they should be fine as long as they get acclimated.

Dani - My girls hated going out in the rain to poop until I got my boy. He loves the mud and rain and of course the girls don't want to miss anything so they have to go out with him.

So you're saying I need another? It took me 6 years to convince hubby we needed one. LOL.

I think it will just be a matter of time before he's okay with rain and since winter is now here we shouldn't see any more until spring (keeping fingers crossed). So far we've only had a dusting of snow though so I don't know how he'll be when we have inches on the ground. He was outside during a small snow fall yesterday morning and nipped at the flakes coming down.

Over the last 5-6 days he has only had a couple of accidents in the house. He still cannot go much over 6 hours overnight but he is only 13 weeks old so this too is just a matter of time.

Dani-

The pup will get much better with the cold and rain as he gets older.  Their little bodies just can't regulate temperature very well, so they will get cold very quickly.  Mine is about a year, she hated the snow and cold last winter but has no problems with it now.

Yes, I'm sure of it too. Thanks. I'm going to try to find a sweater or jacket for him that he won't try to pull off as it would also be good for him to wear during his walks. Funny, he seems to be okay with a 2 mile walk in freezing temps but then again, he is moving the whole time.

Just to add, make sure you get rid of any little accidents with an odour neutraliser, just because we can't smell it, their sensitive little noses can, and it says to them that it's a toilet area!

Hope your problem is getting better. I know how you feel! my dog took a long time to finally get it. Id take him out every 20 min and he would still pee in the house.I put a bell on the door so now I can hear when he wants to come out and that seemed like it helped. Now i might have a accident once in 2 weeks. good luck.

Thanks. He's now 5 months and his accidents are pretty small, usually when he's excited and forgets. We're actually going on 5 days accident free which is a first for him. I really think his bladder infection played a role in our issue with it. He still goes out frequently during the day but he can hold it through the night as long as he's in bed with us. If he's in his crate he'll cry to go out every couple hours or so but he's never really taken to the crate so I think it's more that then having to go potty.
