Hello all, Im new to this forum and there are tons of info on here that I am soaking in. I am a falconer and recently I included a GSP pup that would make a perfect hunting partner and member of the family. I realize that many hunt their GSPs over Gun. I will try to use some of the same techniques but there are some inherant dangers that take place hunting over a bird. First being the retrieve. My goal is to get my GSP to locate game Fur or Feather; Maintain his point and at the same time he flushes I want him to lay down or sit and just watch. My hawk is going to chase/kill anything that is flushed but what I don't want is for my GSP to run after the Game and end up with a muzzle full of Talons (YELP!!) Becuase he is young it shouldnt be difficult to train him that way. I just need to understand a little bit more on working my new pup the proper way and include the extra steps that are common with most GSP training. Any thoughts??

There are quite a few people who hunt with a bird on other forums.
This, tho, is not the best place to gather info on this.the hunters I know of that hunt with a bird use either a DK or DD,don't know any that use a GSP.

I am no expert, but it seems to me you want a dog that is steady to a flush. I know quite a few GSPs that are trained that way. You probably won't have that right away, but I don't see why you can't get there.

Bob Straight, the past president of GSPCA, is also a falconer and hunts with his GSPs and birds. He'd be the person to get in touch with for information. He lives in Vacaville, CA and last email I had was str8away@jps.net. Good luck, raptors are soooooo cool.

Thanks for the info. When looking at a breed of dog to be versatile the GSP stood out in all areas for my style of hunt. I understand that most people use GSPs to hunt birds. I hunt everything and I think to Hunt along side a working GSP would be awesome along with the Hawk. I will also Email the gentleman that is a falconer and hope to gain some much needed info. Thanks again for all the info, reccomendations and suggestions.

The Utah Bird Dogs Forum has a falconry topic (towards the bottom of the topic list).  Might be a good place to network and ask questions.
