Can anyone recommend some advice or references on swimming training. I have a 4 yr old GSP you loves the water, but will only go chest deep. He hasn't picked up the swim thing yet. Were in south eastern PA. Thanks in advance.

Will he go in after a toy? Do you have any friends with dogs that swim? Competition works wonders with dogs learning to swim. You might also try a life vest if he is just a weak swimmer. Also, try going in with him. If his butt sinks help him a bit by holding it up. GSPs are usually great swimmers once they get the hang of it. It is often hard to keep them out of the water.

I have to echo the last comment. Mine took to it instantly once my other one went after the bumper.

he'll go in for toys, sticks. He just goes out of his way to avoid the deeper water. Thanks for the hints. I'll be sure to post some pics when we're successful.

So, he will swim for toys and sticks?

LOL Francine is that a new signature? How funny...

Re swimming: does he like birds? Have you tried throwing in a dead bird?
