Francine: I kept her in place with whoa before but not on a regular basis, will incorporate that in our training, good advice. Brenda: that's our problem, I don't have access to birds, launchers or guns but once a month. I realize that this is not enough that's why I am planning on private sessions, but even those will be once a week max due to work schedule etc. |

Bev, it always strikes me how similar Ringo and Tessa seem to be...the bird demons LOL. I would love to meet your boy one day. |

If you can get Brenda and Tessa together it would probably be a great thing. Brenda owns Ringo's daddy, Gamble's Odyssey Fritz as well as some other great dogs. Here is a link to their website: www.walnuthillgsps.us/
And this is Ringo's daddy, Fritz. Ringo has very big shoes to fill:

and Fritz's picture.

I second what TB says. Brenda is on the top of my list of people I would want to train and handle my dogs. Francine |

| Tessa - I am planning on going to the Nationals in Gainesville, FL next year. Maybe we can meet there. I will have my entire crew with me and if the plans go right Halo will show in Open Obedience. I don't know what else I will be showing in, but most definitely Obedience. I may also take a few days off from the showing and take the crew to the FL beach. |

| I've heard nothing but good things so I'd be comfortable with sending Tessa up there however she is my only dog - can't lead a dogless life for that long. But we're working on another option. |

If you are going to train for steady to flush you might as well consider an AKC SH test while she is there. |

Okay, here is an update: I followed Ken's suggestion of throwing objects at 90 degrees and do the directed retrieves, it's a great exercise that makes the dog pause and focus on the handler and promotes cooperation. Then the following weekend I kept her on the check cord when my friend threw balls for his 10-year old setter Shane. Whereas she used to just outrun him and beat him to the ball, now I made her wait in a sit-stay until Shane retrieved the ball, then I threw hers. Sometimes I threw it while he was retrieving his. We are now throwing side by side. As of yesterday, after just two weeks of these exercises, she is off the check cord waiting by me, if so asked, until I send her to retrieve a ball, either hers or Shanes or a third one I throw and she brings it back without racing after the next with ball no. 1 in her mouth. My friend couldn't believe the change in her! Also, the game of keep-away has completely stopped. I have just now started her on the hold, using the Dobbs method. We are in the first stage. The three-bumper-ladder exercise that Francine suggested will come later. Thanks for all your input! |

So glad to hear you are moving foward. Having a dog that is trained is so much more fun. I re-read the 3 bumper post I made and one thing that I did not include is that as you progress the further away you move from the bumpers. I have done this as far away as 200',no rope,of course. If you are going to transition to FF with the e-collar you would then give stimulation as you give the fetch command, this will create momentum. I do not do this b/c I see this as more of a retreiver thing then a versatile dog thing but it can add to the overall result of FF and obedience. I was doing fun field retrieves in the begining of the hold portion and found I needed to stop by the time I was at the ear pinch stage. The field retreives just added confusion. You will run into problems, there are no text book dogs out there. I will look over the Dobb's method. One thing I know, don't stop the process, you can back up,slow down but don't stop. Good luck and wait until you see the end result, you'll love it, Francine |

Things went much better today...

At first she was all over the place, kinda flustered, then she collected herself and each bird find got more solid. Kept her on the check cord, no more bird chasing. She's not steady to wing, but was stopped short by the check cord. I don't take my camera when we work birds but her points were so beautiful that afterwards we walked back to this spot with the camera and she did it again...two quail on the run there.
I did take her to the pond despite all good intentions not to...kept her on a check cord, water work went well, no issues. Until we did a dead duck launch from across the pond, should have done a live duck search/chase first. She eventually retrieved the duck but only to shore not up to me - just wouldn't pick it up again.
So the next duck search/retrieve will be next spring by then she's on the force fetch.
Overall much less frustrating though for both dog and me.
