This was Bregon's first duck drag and he hasn't seen a duck since he was 5 months old.This drag was 400' straight and in 2' tall grass to the road. The next day he did a 550',2 turn drag,some in tall grass some in forest.

I was wroking the camera,so excuse the poor shots.

I have some rabbit drag pics I will post later.

This is Bregon downing at the fur

return

delivery with sit and hold-the duck was still alive but dazed,not intentional

Very nice. Bregon sure has turned into a pretty boy.

Pixie, this is very interesting to Me. As I would like to use Wyatt to help track wounded deer. So Bregon is lay down at the fur? How do you go about teaching that and why down? I have seen Baying on other verstile sites. Just curious as I would really love get Wyatt to do something similar!

Thanks for the compliments.
I down before sending my dogs on fur or searches (on or off leash),water also. Just my personal choice. Before entering a bird field I sit them.
In real life I do not down them at the blood of a shot deer.
Best way to get started is to get blood and start laying tracks. The better the dog's nose the better.If the dog has focus,not all dogs do, that's even better.
Doing drags is not like blood tracking but it can help sharpen a dog's nose and get them to use their noggin.Many people expect to see their dog performing drags like a vaccuum but it simply is not true nor do I expect my dogs to do drags this way.1 intelliegnt dog is worth more than a dozen dim witted dogs with decent noses.
I teach down as puppies then I bring it to the water and forest work. The strict obedience I teach is not for all dogs. Some dogs will loose intensity and/or loose range,become bootlickers. Know a dog's boldness,independence,range and temperment or you can screw it up with strict obedience.
When doing duck searches a dog should be using it's nose,so much sometimes that you can see the flews puff and you can see the 'wheels turning'.
Versatility is whole other ball game then upland hunting. You want to see lights turn on,use your dog in field,forest and water.
Did someone mention addiction?
