Ok the other planted bird post went off topic (great thread) so in there I saw people say that they did let dogs catch birds.  I also saw people say that pen birds don't fly like wild birds.

I have a pigeon trap (thanks to rugergundog) and have caught 5 wild pigeons so far.  I have tucked there head and put them to sleep per perfect start.  So the bird is not going to fly until I come up and "wake it up".  I am pretty confident that Wyatt used his nose and found the birds.  Now my next step was to get a launcher to work on points.  Is there a way to put birds on the ground so you know where they are but will fly when the dog comes in?

If you use a launcher, is it remote?  If not how do you use it?

Launchers are great, but aren't necessarily required. Do you have a field near you with some at least knee high grass? Put the pigeon to sleep, or just dizzy it, fluff up some of the brush and set it in there. You can also sort of toss the bird in. If you dizzy it right it isn't going aywhere for 20-30 minutes or so.

I don't use a launcher, but I also don't let my dog catch the birds. It can be a personal preference but I'd rather not have to fix the breaking on point issue later on so I avoid it to start with. I put the bird in the brush as described above and lead the dog in on a check cord from downwind. Try to catch it at a crosswind if possible and look for the dog's reaction. It probaly won't hold point but that momentary stop when it catches the smell is what you're looking for. You can hold the dog back on the CC and go in and kick the pigeon out of the brush and flush it. I then let the dog chase to its heart's content.

It only took a few times and my dog got it. She holds her points until the flush, uses her nose like a champ and is having a blast.

A piece of advice from my point of view, do 1 or 2 at a time and then only 2-3 a day. It keeps the dog interested but they dont' get bored. They want more and end up doing better overall.

List, you are correct, with pigeons the only way to keep them on the ground is to have them dizzied or asleep to the point they can be caught. I only use them with remote traps on young dogs, If I am giving a broke dog a refresher I will sleep them on the ground.
I don't stop dogs with checkcords, so don't put dogs on the ground that are not going to fly when approached.
When using quail, not in traps. I just shake them a bit and throw them backwards into whatever cover I want them in, they are a ground dwelling bird and will mostly stay until disturbed. I want them to get up and go when approached.

Chukars and quail I just grab them by the feet and let them hang upside down until they quit flapping their wings. At this point you just drop them to the ground.
Hanging them upside down gives them kind of a head rush equivalent of dizzying them.
