First weekend in April is the first HT of the year around here...so started getting Tara ready for SH (maybe MH depending on how the week goes-she's not far off). This will be her only run until fall as the others are to close to her whelping date -next HT is only 2 weeks from her due date.

She did very well today and performed at MH level, ran her with my old boy Mac for backing work, hope she keeps this up!! Some shots from today:

Good luck! My advice is to intentionally set up some screwed up situations because they ALWAYS happen at a hunt test, especially master level.

You got that right!! When I ran Taras' sire in MH, he was on an honour....the bird flushed straight into his mouth, he never even moved his head, just opened his mouth and had it, LOL!! (thank you handler....)
Now I will do things like wet a quail down and chase it around the dog(to simulate those lovely rainy day birds)....throw birds in it's face, let a non-broke dog down when it's on point to bust the bird in front of it.......still, seems like no matter how much you think you "got it covered" something new will crop up or your dog will simply have a "memory lapse"!!

Good Luck Ann!
I do some of the same stuff to really screw with them and proof them... you have too with some of the things that happen in a Test and I absolutely abhor DNQ! Like you, I break them to a Master level to run Senior and will go so far as to stand them 3-4 feet in front of the Pigeon Coop door, open it and let the whole coop blow out right by them. They are usually "vibrating" by the time the coop is empty! Sit Pigeons on their back, walk birds around under their legs, young dogs blowing their Points, Force Fetch no matter how natural of a retriever they are, the list goes on and you still can't seem to possibly prepare for the next "WTH was that?" that leaves you standing with your jaw hanging at your belt and the dreaded "Thank You Handler...."

Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

Zodiak, where in NW PA are you? I am in Beaver County. New to training bird dogs with a 4mo old pup. I am looking at joining a place called oak ridge? Have you heard of it? Sure would like to meet some folks like you and Bruce to help me make sure I am doing the dog justice!

I'm close to 2 hrs north of you in Erie. Oakridge is having the HT I'm attending in April - first weekend, can't remember exact date right now - you should come down for a day just to meet people as you are close to the grounds.

You're welcome to come up on a weekend to train sometime and watch some older dogs run. You can shoot me an e-mail at zodiakgsps@aol.com

Got a little run in today after work, what a nice day to be out! Cool yet, but the sun was out and the snow is GONE, ya!!!
Day 3 in our training for MH & it went pleasantly well!!!
Decided to give the old man a run as his back is worsening (old injury, compressed discs) and he cannot hunt very long anymore, not sure he will be able to hunt at all this fall actually (depressing thought) old buzzard still gave a MH performance on his birds, he's not as stylish as he once was -he can't raise his tail past level with his back anymore, his poor rear is getting weak too ): - but he's still as intense as ever:

and still loves to retrieve, he is one of the best dogs I ever saw at marking

Used him for backing work with Tara....she did much better today than last time, I was having trouble with her backing through the retrieve with no whoaing. Today she stood really well, we are making good progress!!!

Her manners on her birds were perfect today (3rd time out training with no e-collar)

Then she disappeared on me while my buddy was fighting with a shell stuck(spent one didn't eject) & I wasn't watching her.....didn't come when called?? Hmmmm, went looking near where we saw her last, found her in some redbrush, the woodcock are coming through!! Might have to grab the blank gun and take a walk this weekend & do some training on them!

Picked her brother up on my way out from his owner & ran him, he's SH level now, needs some work for MH, but he did a nice job for me, especially considering he isnt used to me handling him. Chase:
