As a newbie, I thought I better intro myself. I'm from the state of South Dakota... pretty popular with pheasant hunting as I live right in the center of the main attraction town that hosts pheasant hunting.
heres a few pics of my GSP and hes now soon going on 4months.

| well i had to pay for the Herina repair which was 65.00 total so that was the cost of the dog bc he said he'd take it in and charge me for it or I take him in and get it repaired. So i got lucky. However, he said if this dog had not to have it taken to the vet for this, he could be worth money and is it true GSP can be worth to $1,200.00? i kinda not believed him but i thought I'd ask you guys if that could be true. |

i think you did very well for $65. in the Boston area the same fix is going to run me $150, but the breeder has agreed to reimburse. $1,200 for a puppy or a finished dog? I'd say for $1,200 for a puppy, they'd better be throwing in a new sony flat screen. |

LOL... well being papered and all shots are up to date, EXCEPT the herina repair... i got him for free.. The breeder he used to go to in Sioux Falls, SD charged him 300.00 to repair and that is my dog's mother we're talking about and then he moved closer to Madison, SD and is 40.00 for repair along with shots they give ending cost of 65.00 with mediciations. your dog looks like mine there!! not often you see solid liver dogs. HE DID THROW IN A FEW TENNIS BALLS FOR ME!!! DOES THAT COUNT INSTEAD OF A SONY FLAT SCREEN? lmao...... |

Solid liver is not uncommon, true there are more ticked out there.Even black is becoming more of a common color. $1,200 for a puppy? Well, it would depend on the lines and how much $$$$ the breeders put into the dam and sire. To pay for color is crazy. Then again, something is only as much as what someone else is willing to pay for it. 65 buckaroos sounds like a sweet deal. |

Might want to look in the dictionary on that one. "Uncommon" is exactly what solid liver is, solid black is even more uncommon.
"Uncommon" however doesn't make it any better or worse, just less frequently seen as compared to patched, ticked, or roan.
Words are just words but they in fact do have meaning. |

uncommon-rare;not common or usual;strange;remarkable Does the solid liver color bring this description to mind? Maybe I see more AKC GSPs then the "average" person, or maybe I need to look that word up as well?., but I see solid livers at nearly every NAVHDA and AKC test I go to,AKC being more.Ticked/patched will probably always out number solid liver, I would by no means call solid liver any of the descriptons listed above. At one time, maybe 8-10 years ago this would have been true. I have been seeing more black/white as well. Primarily going to FTs will most likely narrow your view of color range. Aren't they all solid white with patches. |

Well yes, since less than 10% of the breed in the US is either solid, or black, that would be the proper terminology.
I've been going to field trials for four years. I've owned and hunted behind GSP's from "hunting and German lines" since 1969 all over the US and abroad.
The only way solid patterns or black are not "uncommon" is if you are in a region where they are "common" and everyone is breeding to the same stuff.
It's a simple matter of genetics and math. Black and Solid are both dominant traits. You can only get either with at least one parent expressing the trait. That is a bioligically limiting factor you can't get around.
The other patterns and colors are recessive which means they are going to occur at much higher rates.
The only way black or solid will ever become common is if they are bred heavily and that will only happen if they start dominating in the field, and in the show ring. Solids have a hard time finishing in the show ring and black is still not allowed. That is also a huge limiting factor. Neither dominates in field events in the AKC or AF so that's yet another limiting factor.
No not all field trial dogs are white and patched. Try attending some trials and you might see that. Yes you will see a predominance of white and liver dogs, particularly in areas where heat tolerance is an issue and since dogs and semen travel all over the country with relative ease you can see any of them anywhere.
It's not a matter of something being better but words have meaning and if we don't stick to the actual meanings of words the language is useless.
Try entering your own dogs in some trials, most if not all clubs now offer quite a few walking stakes as well as all walking trials. The worst thing you'll do is have some fun and learn something about another "dog game".
I'll be judging a trial in your area next month, come on out. CR |

Well, I'm not going to spend my time researching your statistics. So, how many solid livers would be registered in the last 8 years that would make them so rare? 10% does sound low but what are the actual numbers. I didn't say the numbers were more then ticked I said solid liver are not uncommon. Fact is, I am seeing more and more each year. Several members on this board have solid livers. I don't hear any more"Wow, look, a solid liver!" just doesn't surpise anyone anymore. I would run my older boy after he is done versatile testing but my pocket is not deep enough to do both versatile and FT'ing. If there are no retreiving stakes I would not waste my time to watch, simply the fact that it is one demensional kinda looses me in the purpose of a versatile breed. Sorry, don't mean to troll. |
