Tessa just turned 5 months old and today had her first REAL point. Saw pointed a heron and held the point for almost a minute while he took off and settled further down, she didn't move.

This is my first pointer so I don't really know what to do when she points. I think out in the field you're supposed to move in, approaching the dog from the side? But she was on a short leash. I didn't do anything, I just watched, although inside I was jumping for joy and wanted to praise her...my questions:

1. Will praising in that situation break her concentration?

2. How do you show your approval?

3. Do you even need to show your approval?

4. How can you teach the dog to hold a point? Should you teach the dog to hold a point? What commands do you use when you want to release the dog from the point?

Taking into account I am assuming this was a sight point (she saw the heron) and not a scent point (two different things):
Also keep in mind this (with me) is with 7-9 week old pups sometimes, though client dogs same thing whenever they bring them in (I prefer under 5 months).

1. I never talk to young pups on point, yes it can break their concentration. The only thing I want them thinking of is the smell of that bird.

2. After the bird is gone, I praise them to show approval.

3. not really, it is instinct to point, the dog doesn't care what you think.

4. Get her on a lot of wild birds, when she points and breaks and they fly away the game is over, most gs's will start holding longer. Once pups are letting me get 'to' them I will shoot a few birds. Sometimes at this point they will start popping them sooner, as they connect the bird getting in the air with making the retrieve. Most gs's can get to the point of steady to flush this way, some can't, the more cooperative your dog is the better the chances are. If the dog is to be a test/trial dog I then stop letting it chase (I have already taught it come and collar conditioned it). Then when the dog is old enough/mature enough (this vairies from dog to dog) I teach it whoa (stand still). I use a head tap to release dogs from point, or to make a retrieve.
