I have been invited to go on a hunt in Liberal, Kansas and I will be taking Gunrr. I am just investigating and would like to know what to expect. Iknow it will be colder, we are from the Tx. hill country, but what is the land like up there? Do I need dog boots, vest etc. I would also like some tips for going from quail and dove to pheasant. I hear it can be a big difference. Any help would be appreciated. If you are from up there would you mind e mailing me and maybe we could converse. '

Thank's,

N.D.

What time of year are you going?  Even into November you could have temperature ranges from 70's to 20's.  My dogs have always been started and hunted on pheasants in NW Iowa, but never had trouble picking up quail and partridge in central Iowa.  There was one time when Charlie followed a scent down a draw for 1/4 only to have iron weeds explode and he came running back to me.  Biggest bird he ever found and the damn thing was gobbling the whole time.

To Charlie, thanks for 15 years of companionship. I miss you old dog.

Welcome to Kansas.. we are flat.. oh and did I mention.... we are FLAT!!! well we do have the flint hills, but they are not very big, and the opposite direction of where you are going to be.

When are you coming? Released Bird season starts in October and runs through March. Fall and winter here gets a bit touchy... One day you can be huddling trying to stay warm in a major snow storm, then the next day you are out running across the snow in shorts and 80 degree weather. If Gunr is not acclimatized to colder weather you might want to consider a quilted hunter vest for him. I don't think you will need boots, unless you are out in snow.

A lot depends on what part of the state you are going to, and the time of year. I don't go there for pheasant (as I live in IA!), but have gone down the the SW corner for quail after our season is over. It can be hot, even in January (well it was hot for our dogs that are used to way below freezing at that time of year), and down there, they have some cactus, so we did use boots when hunting those areas. If you are going to the northwest or central the terrain will be much different and you probaby won't need the boots. I actually got sick of boots the first time I went and now bring a bike inner tube and duck tape with me everywhere.

That part of the state is pretty dry and sandy with lots of agriculture.  You will probably find quail around there but they have been hit pretty hard the last few years.

As everyone has said it can be real hot any time of the hunting season.  It's usually warm until mid-season being chilly in the morning with nearly t-shirt temps during the day.  Bring boots in case you get into sand burrs.

Your dog will figure out pheasants pretty quick.  Just don't expect to shoot every bird over solid point.  If your dog works the bird well and it wild flushes, shoot it.  I typically expect to shoot less than half of my pheasants over point especially after the first weekend.  That doesn't mean the dog did not work them well.

I figured on being prepared for any weather myself, but I wasn't sure just how cold it may get for the dogs. Down here 20 degrees is pretty cold, but the dogs do pretty well. Thanks for the input everyone and feel free to add any other pointers.

Liberal Kansas is in the SE corner of Kansas, a hop skip and jump from the Oklahoma Pan-handle. I am assuming you are coming up through the TX panhandle through Oklahoma to Kansas.
