New to this forum. Last week my GSP Jake had to be put down. He wasn't eating good for a few days, Monday he acted fine, but when I got home from work he could harly move. A mass had burst in his spleen causing internal bleeding. The vet said he had no chance.  He was not in pain, just quiet. It was a sad day.

After a few days I couldn't stand not having a dog so I was able to find another. He looks like Jake. Jakes grandpa is my pups dad's grandpa as well. Anyway, what I'm looking for is a reccomendation on a good book to help me train this dog. I used Wing & Shot with Jake, but it seams outdated. Please help me find a book

Thanks, Jerry

First of all, I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your old friend. I have been through this before and can understand what you are feeling.

From your post, it sounds like you intend to hunt with your new pup.
Not sure where you are located, but I have provided a link to NAVHDA.
There may be a chapter in your area. I have been very involved with the organization and find it very usefull, as well as a group of very nice people willing to help with your training.

Welcome to the site, there are a lot of nice people here as well.

Jerry -

Welcome to the forum.  I am so sorry about your best buddy.  I know you will miss him.  It is wonderful that you have gotten another furkid and are looking to do some training.  I do not currently hunt my dogs, but I have been looking for training instructions as I am thinking about doing to hunt training.  I have had several folks recommend the DVDs, Perfect Start and Perfect Finish from Perfection Kennels. I ordered both and they are excellent.  Here is a link to the Perfection Kennels site:

I bought my DVDs from Gun Dog Supply at:

So sorry for your loss Jerry :( You never forget that either but it usually leads you to a wonderful new friend that is all the luckier to have you as their owner.

I'd like to 2nd the recommendation for Perfection Kennels' DVD's. Even better if you can make the trek to visit Jon Haan. We took our 1st boy there (the 2nd will go next year) and not only did we love it, but our dog loved it. He followed the DVD's exactly making it very easy for us to mimic everything at home.

Good luck with your new boy! Kathy
