Just got a 10 week old GSP and she is going to be an inside dog.  Too many predators where I live to have a dog outside all the time.  Any advice for letting one stay in the house at this age.  Crate them quite a bit, or not???

Crating is good, but these are social dogs and need to be with there people too.  Also, you need to be sure your pup gets lots of potty breaks, play time and exercise.  Where do you live with so many predators?  What kind of predators do you have?  Can your dog stay out some during the day?

At 10 weeks I dont think its advisable to leave your puppy outside for any length of time unsuprivised. For starters at night and when you are not home puppy needs to be crated up. No matter how much he wines and cries puppy doesnt come out of the crate or get ANY ATTENTION what so ever until he is quiet. Once he has been quiet for 20 or 30 seconds to start he can come out. Then he goes straight outside and doesnt come back in until he uses the potty. I should mention for the first while pick him up and carry him dont let him walk alone until he knows he needs to go outside anytime he leaves the kennel. This will take a few weeks.

Belle is right puppy is going to need alot of attention, play time and potty breaks. So anytime he finishes eating, drinking, playing, or wakes up he goes outside and doesnt come back in until he does go. Even if that means being outside for 20 minutes you cant let him figure out he doesnt have to go if he doesnt want to. To come back in you go to the bathroom.

Generally for starters I train my dogs they are not allowed on the furniture (sometimes I go soft and let them up). Once they are old enough they are trained to ask to come up. Yes thats right they ask by simply putting their head on the couch or chair. They first have to know to lay in their bed.Their bed is in the living room out of the way but in an area where they can keep an eye on the family otherwise they wont want to use it.

No matter how much you want to sleep with puppy, puppy is better off in the kennel for the first while. Once they are sleeping through the night and are reliably house trained you could start letting him sleep on the bed with the room door closed at first if you wish.

Noses stay off any table or counter teach this young and it wont be hard when they are older. They best way to do this is to not give them table scraps ever. If they dont know what it is they wont want it. Keep garbages closed and out of the way and dirty dishes out of reach. You would be surprised how fast and quiet a dog can grab something off a counter so keep an eye on them.

I crate a pup that age when I'm sleeping or gone to keep them safe (and your belongings in one piece) - and occasionally when they are acting up and I know it's because they are tired and needing a nap. Otherwise, the best and fastest way to potty train is to keep her attached to you with a long leash so she can't sneak away and have an accident that goes unnoticed. It's a lot of work but effective.
