Hi guys,  My name is Tony and I am new to the shorthair world.  I just got my first one her name is Katy and she is 15 weeks old.  She has been a terrific dog so far and I have very high hopes for her.  Her obediance training is coming along fine.  She sits and stays very well, we are working on whoa and the kennel right now too.  I am running into problems with the whole fetching thing.  She doesn't like to brind the ball (or whatever we are playing with) all of the way back to me.  She tends to drop it about 5 feet in front of me and just keep running to me.  I have been using treats for most of her training along with praise, but I am lost when it comes to this fetching thing I just don't see any progress.  Any ideas.....Thanks guys.

PS. I think that I posted this under a different section to start, but realized "training was probably where it belonged

aj -

I agree with pixie.  She is still a puppy and very young.  Make it more of a game and no stress.  Lot's of fun and praise. You don't want to turn her off of coming to you with or without the ball.  She will get to a full retrieve in time. One thing you can try that I do even with my pups is sit in a chair.  That way they know there is not going to be a chase game and will usually bring the ball back to you.  Just give it some time and make if fun.

You can hunt a dog that gets the bird within five feet of you. Right now you should worry about introduction to birds and get her swimming. If you get her searching, a little steady and retrieving to your general location, you should have a very fun first fall.

Also find a group. I always recommend NAVHDA, because it's what I know, but any training group should do. Then you can compare with other folks what's age appropriate for your pup.
