I haven't had Hunter in the woods on real wild birds yet, but, I check cord him into the pigeons in the field and he'll point but then start barking and going nuts wanting the bird to fly. I DON'T want this during this fall hunting season. I don't know why he started this? Any help or advice?

He is standing on point barking, or jumping around and barking on the end of the checkcord? If it is the latter, loose the checkcord, get some traps and pop birds on him, if you don't teach him whoa in the yard (means stand there and be quiet). If he is jumping around on the end of the checkcord he isn't pointing anymore, and he doesn't know whoa.

Trey, I don't even need the check cord for him to whoa. I walk all of them and heel as we walk and I will whoa them and they stop. I was just using the checkcord to control him a little on the pigeons. Maybe it's because he knows the pigeon is just going to fly back to the coop. Maybe he is used to it's smell? He does point on the check cord but if he sees the pigeon or is close he gets kind of ansy and he'll bark and try to make the bird fly. He did not do this hunting last year. Any other ideas. I have a friend who has some launchers for birds. They actually have a huge bird farm. I'll go down there and work them there. Then I'll get to see how little LOLA is doing too.

Will a bark collar discourage this behavior on bird?

Fair question, but I personally wouldn't do it. You don't want that dog getting a jolt while he's focused on a bird. Good way to get him to start blinking birds...My two cents.

I've found it is because he gets excited and wants it to fly so I'll shoot it. He lives to retrieve. I had him out in the woods the other day and he full pointed a woodcock and didn't budge until I walked up and flushed it. Maybe it's just because we use the pigeons so much.
