When I had Winston out at the beach the other night there was a little pug there (didn't bug us until we had been there for about 45min) Winston didnt' even notice it was there until the dog came running over at him (probably just curious) well when ever Winston sees other dogs he gets really excited but this dog he seemed like if I would have let him he would have chased him down and done him harm (as if Winston saw him as prey not another dog). I always keep Winston on a lounge line at the beach so of course he couldn't actually do anything, but I confronted him firmly by making him sit and telling him to "leave it". Also whenever he becomes fixated on something I never allow him to look at the object of interest, his eyes have to be on me (and he knows it). After a short session of this he pretty much gave it up and would follow me back into the water, of course every once in a while looking their direction. Still though I was concerned with his initial behavior, he has met a small dog before in the vet's office with no problem he just wanted to sniff him. I would have like to have seen both dogs greet one another this way the other night....but that didn't happen.
Well I guess I am asking for any further advice for these kinds of situations. What you think I did right or wrong etc. I want my dog to be friendly with all dogs not just the ones his size. Thanks....and now I am off to bed....though hopefully I will be able to sleep it is still really hot!!
You can take an applause!!!! You were able to refocus Winston away from the little dog and back on you. My problem with Rocky is just the opposite. Rocky is spectacular with little dogs and puppies, but is leary of Big black Labs and other aggressive dogs that get in his face. Rocky is just fine if big dogs he doesnot know stay on their own path. I have been working from day one at socializing Rocky to all dogs and it is a continue battle. Rocky was attached by a giant Lab that punctured a hole in his left leg last winter. Rocky limped for days and licked the puncture untill it healed. But the scar left in Rocky's brain is fear when he sees any big Black Lab. So I stopped taking Rocky to areas off leash where we can meet with other unsocialized dogs. Rocky is only allowed to play with the friendly dogs we know. He is healing some what, but I can never trust him again in a dog park or public trail off leash
I have watched episodes of The Dog Whisper many times. I am continually working on getting Rocky together with well mannered dogs and he has been doing well with them. So I think Rocky is coming along well. I just don't want to go in an open invironment and have a not trained dog that comes up and takes another bite out of Rocky. So I am going to public places and letting Rocky off leash if there are no other dogs around. Or if I talk to the people first to ask if their dog likes other dogs before I let Rocky off leash. Rocky walks excellent on the leash as I trained him The Dog Whisper Way initially with the leash looped over high around the neck like a showdog. Don't need to do that anymore Training is an on going job.
