I was wondering about using scent. I was thinking about having a seperate toy and adding scent to introduce the pup during a play/work session(10wkoldgsp) Whta do you think, and how/when should I intro. scent.
thanks,

Have you thought about using feathers? You can buy feathers of game birds at Cabelas and such other stores or you can maybe ask some hunters if they have any left over. Best thing to do tho is just get some birds. When they expire you can keep their wings. Francine |

| Should I keep the dummy w/feathers as a separate toy to use during play/work. Also, do you offer a chew toy, or should I try to break the habit. |

As a rule, I never play with what I will be using during training. I have separate toys. Francine |

| That's what I thought, so a dummy w/wings for training, and another toy for play/chew. While training should seem like play for a pup, do you set aside a little time and just use the dummy while playing catch. Sorry for the simple q's, just waiting on my videos. |

This is where problems can begin.IMO. I feel that perfect practice makes perfect. If you allow a puppy to take liberties during play but not during play training the dog will obviously take the more fun route, which may be doing what he pleases and ignoring a play/train command. What you allow a dog to do is what they learn. Have fun, keep pressure low and if you don't give a command the dog can't disobey a command. You can always reinforce "come" with a leash or check cord with little pressure. When do your videos arrive? I recommend watching all to the end and make a plan. In training learning often overlaps. You make me jealous. Can't wait for my little guy to grow up and come on home. Francine |

| A week or so on the videos, and 10 days for the pup (mgsp) If he starts to chew the dummy w/ wings up, do you say no and take it away/ say no, take it away and give the chew toy? |

Don't train with anything he can "play" with or get a hold of to play with. I would just take it away and say nothing. I then would start to teach hold. Francine |

I am reviving this. I wonder how it went? I have the dummies, wings and scent but no videos. Was thinking of doing some light retrieving and tracking. Tessa is 4 months old. Any advice in addition to the above is appreciated. |

TessaGA, does Tessa pick things up and carry them? If you throw something does she chase? Does she pick it up? If she picks it up what does she do? Come to you? Run away with it? Come 1/2 way? I have always started out in a hallway. this way there is no place for the dog to run off to and I have not had a dog that wouldn't coma back down the hall to me. Once you are outside tho, it can be different. But, the hallway lets you know what type of cooperation you will have. Running and picking up and carrying it partial way is cooperation enough for a puppy under 5 months.Once outside I hook on a leash or check cord and reel the puppy in gently.Let them have it for a few moments and then take it away.Don't ever snatch anything from a puppy. They won't be so willing next time to trust you with their prized retrieve. I don't like to throw things for untrained dogs b/c it tends to elicite to much excitment. I want the dog as calm as can be and focused on 3 things, me, the retrieve and me. For tracking you can use food. Make a short trail, leave something at the end for a reward. Point to the ground, showing the track and repeating, quietly,"track" or whatever word you like. Dogs pick up quickly. |

Thanks, Francine! Strangely, Tessa has been retrieving from the day I got her (12 weeks old). She brought back the first ball I threw, so I started saying fetch along with it and now when I say fetch this or fetch that she goes and gets it. That's inside. We have an Orbee ball and when we play fetch outside, she brings that back too everytime because she knows I will throw it again. I let her show it off for a little while before asking her to drop it. More often than not she drops it when she gets to me, waiting for me to throw it again. I also make sure not to overdo it, and stop playing fetch when she is still very eager to keep fetching. I keep her on a checkcord so I can enforce any command like recall, if needed, but so far, not needed for the fetch, and only once for the recall. I also started putting her in a whoa, that calms her down some, then throw the ball and say fetch. We've done some tracking using cheese and me stomping down the grass, she does well on some days, not so well on others, may have to do with not being mentally into it or the conditions of those days, not sure. |
