Hi there! I'm new to the forum (and don't have a GSP yet), but my husband and I would really like to (and are looking forward to) becoming a GSP family.  We had decided on the breed, as we do a lot of outdoor stuff (running, hiking, playing at the beach) and would love to have a dog that enjoys it as much as we do.

Anyway, while my husband was at work (he studies non-game birds at a quail hunting plantation turned research station), his boss mentioned that he was thinking about trying to train a dog to locate songbird nests.  Has anyone ever heard of that being done?  These are birds that nest on the ground.  Regardless of whether this works out, my husband would love to have some canine company as he spends the day trekking through the forest.

Thanks for your comments!

A GSP can very easily be trained for this task.
As a pup most GSP's will locate nests because they have not yet learned the difference between game and tweety birds.
I had a hunting buddy that his dog would constantly point mouse nests. Needless to say, his hunting buddies capitalized on this, and we never let him live it down.
There is a guy in my NAVHDA chapter that has been hired to train a guys GSP to locate deer sheds.
These are intelligent dogs with great noses, its just a matter of what direction they are trained.
