I'm a newbie here, just got my first GSP, Luka.  He's 4 months now, and I would like to have him professionally trained in a few months, because I have no idea what I'm doing!  Anyone know of any good trainers in Texas?  Around the Houston area?  Thanks in advance.

Can you tell us a little bit more about what you want to do with your dog--field trialing, hunt tests, NAVHDA, good ole' hunting dog?  And how far are you willing to drive?

Only looking to have a sound hunting dog, nothing else like field trials, etc.  I would like to drive only in Texas, but that can be a long way!  Anywhere within 6 hours or so is good for me.

Have you looked into the perfect start/perfect finish videos?

You're up by my home town of Wichita Falls.

How long does it generally take for you to train a dog?

Kimberley,

I haven't seen Charlie online much over the past month, so you would probably do best to email or call him.
How long training would take would really depend on how far you wanted to go in training, how old the dog is and how easily it took the training. If you need his contact info, it should be on his site, but if not PM/email me and I'll give it to you. Charlie's been at it for quite some time and you wouldn't go wrong placing a dog with him.

Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

Hadn't looked in here for a while. "How long does it usually take to train a dog". Well that's kind of like "how long does it take an artist to complete a given work! It takes as long as it takes. It also depends greatly on what it is you desire, what's been done prior to a dog getting here, and the individual dog since like us humans there's no set time frame on how long it takes to learn something or how long it will take to have that training fully ingrained so that the dog is repeating it most of the time without reinforcement.
