So I have taken my 11-month-old GSP to the dog park several times, however today we went to a new one. There were more dogs there than usual, but not tons. About 10 minutes after being there my dog went behind me and peed on the back of my leg. Another 10 minutes later he tried to do it to a woman standing near me, but I yelled at him as soon as I saw him lift his leg and he didn't soil the poor woman. He has NEVER done this before, so I was completely dumbfounded. The first time I figured it was a fluke, however two times when he's never done it before tells me something. Does anyone know why he was doing this or what the reasons may be?

He was marking his turf. Just stay on him and stop him from doing it and he will stop it. At his age he is jousting figuring all the marking thing out.

Thanks for the replies, that was kind of what I was thinking. PB he definitely knows I'm the boss, will obey most commands I give him and right after he peed on my I lifted him up by the scruff of his neck and "yelled" NO at him.

You probably don't need that level of correction yet. I would give him a pop of the leash and say unh uh stopping him before he starts which means you need to stay aware of what he is doing right now. He is at the age where he is going to challenge you a bit, but it doesn't last long if you stay on top of them. The peeing on things they see as theirs is a common male trait and will continue if you don't nip it in the bud now. It took only a couple of corrections when my boy Ringo attempted this at about the same age. H chose his sisters, Belle and Halo, to try to mark. You need to also watch him any time you take him to a new place as he will try to mark there too.

Thanks TB, I will try to stay vigilant about watching for that behavior again. Haven't seen him try to do it since the dog park.

He may have been extra excited and a little insecur at the dog park and also there were allot of new dogs around. It really was a complement to you because he was just making sure they all knew you were his person. LOL, still if you are in a situation that might be extra exciting or with new dogs around just watch for the behavior and let him know gently that he doesn't need to mark you.

I had to laugh when I read this thread. My first date with my husband was to a field trial to watch my boss and husband's friend/hunting buddy run his brittany. We were standing in a circle talking when a huge chocolate lab entered our circle. Of course, the animal lover in me started petting him so he was rubbing his side into the side of my leg as I petted his head. I was engrossed in the conversation, still rubbing the labs head, when I hear a lady scream "STOP, he is peeing on your leg". Yep. all down my leg. Guess he liked his head rub.
