I've been meaning to get a check cord for awhile now. Just looking for suggestions on what type and length. I was looking in Gun Dog Supply at the different ones. I want a rope style one. What type do you guys use? It's mostly going to be used for recal training. |

You dont need anything longer than 30 feet.if its just for recall or in the yard training then just go the pet store and get one.
Otherwise I really like my permatack.
I would look at another source other than gun dog supply just based on the way their forum alone is run. Lion Country Supply and Dogs Unlimited are my 2 favorite. |

| I think I'm going to go to Home Depot and buy the material myself and fabricate my own. I think I could make a few of them for the price they are listed for on supply sites. |

| I love the permatak. They don't tangle and the are easy on the hands. They also don't hold water when they get wet. Even with just recall training I prefer the permatak. They are worth the extra cost in my opinion. |

| I didn't go with anything special, so my only feedback is regarding length. We got a 20 foot and while that was mostly perfectly fine for training...regarding recall, I did find myself wishing I had the 30 feet to build the recall distance a bit more. |

If your dog is 100% at 20 feet he will be 100% at 30 feet. You just need to lay the ground work down properly. |

| Maybe so, but for training it...I preferred a 30 over the 20...I liked the extra distance, the ability to be a little further away. To step around a corner with still good length that would test her ability to be taunted by distractions (outdoors in our unfenced yard) while not being able to see me...but still to the command regardless. It's not a vast difference, and the 20 was great for initial training indoors....but I definitely liked the 30 foot (though, for more basic stuff...I used the 20 because 30 was just too much to deal with). |

| If you had a 30 youd be like me wanting a 50 because 30 isnt good enough. Funny thing is I have them all from 10, 15, 20, 30, and 50 feet. But I keep going back to my 30 footer but if I could put a permatack order together id order a 20. Im sure my poor 30 foot permatack would barley get used. |

| I have always made my own. I like nylon 3/8 inch thick it more plyable then regular washline. For a clasp I like the heavey brass type as opposed to the regular leash end type clasp. They quick connect. Usually rope is sold in hardware store by the foot I think 25-30 ft is good. If you opt to by 50 or 100 ft roll you can change and make different length's. I never put any handles or knotts in the rope so it won't hang up or catch when you don't need it to. IMO recall is the most important thing . You get him comming and you got it licked ! |

| I made my own too... and I did a 30 or 35 foot... I intended on 30 but left length for attaching to the clasp and it ended up longer... |

| My permatak ones are 20. I have one I bought at a pet store that I don't use often that is 30. I also have a light line that is 30 that I use with recall training. It is light enough that the dog forgets he has it on. |

Because I'm super cheap and didn't wanna pay the money for a check cord from one of the online suppliers. I went to the local Menards and and bought the material myself. For $24 I made 2 leads and a check cord, and I got to learn a new knot hey! That seems like a pretty good deal to me Jack( uncle Si style) |

You will see the difference in a couple years of a dog dragging that around. Its good you saved some money but I would invest i a good CC. For the amount you are going to use it when cheap out? The me thats like buying an $80000 trailer then going with a $1000 truck to pull it. |

| That analogy was a little much, don't ya think? Just because you make it yourself doesn't mean it bad or cheap. But hey, we all have different outlooks. |

| I have used a variety of check cords and for me the permatak are easier on the hands if you aren't wearing gloves and in really heavy brush and cover they slide right through and never snag. To RyanGSPs point they will look the same 10 years later as the day you bought them. They also come in bright orange so they are really easy to see. It is my personal preference, but all the check cords accomplish the same thing. Good luck with your training. |

AJbrown, my 20 foot was $6.99, went back for the 30 foot at $7.99. I have no reason to need them for 10 years as I used them for maybe a month or two with my dog before she no longer needed them. Have since loaned them to friends who are getting great use out of them...and will use the same ones when we get another some day, and if not...I think I can muster up another $7.99 if I don't get mine back Use what works for you. If I trained numerous dogs, annually, as I imagine Texasbelle does as a breeder, I can certainly see where a better quality would be nice to have. |

In 10 years mine may be a little dirty but a quick wipe they will look almost brand new. I tired the make you own CC with stuff from the hardware store and to be honest wasnt impressed.
A proper check cord will be easy to see, hold up against thorns, rocks, logs, water, and will float in water. You dont think you need a floating check cord until you need to get a grip on the CC.

Really? I use mine atleast once a week in the summer, heck just this weekend the tow rope broke on our icefishing sled and guess what came out of the trunk. Yup good ole checkcord. Most times its not even used for dog stuff, but it sure is nice to have in the trunk with a tie out stake, or better yet when your breaking a dog or whoa training a dog a CC sure comes in handy.

Based upon the contents of his truck and our garage I think the check cord is the last go to rope for the hubbs Come to think of it, I think he may even told me buying the check cord was unnecessary due to the options we already had at home. Engineers...always prefer making something existing, useful and better |

| I really didn't need mine to last long... I used it on my pup and then as he got older and I transitioned to the e-collar (which I spent good money on)... but I only used the check cord for recall and that is all the e-collar is too... I don't hunt or do any major competition events, I don't breed or train a bunch of dogs either... so my homemade one was just fine for me... |
