RyanGSP and I will have to agree to disagree on the sit command. I train sit early and have never had problems with my dogs figuring out the difference between field, conforrmation, and obedience. The funny thing is that one of the few things conformation and field people do agree on is don't teach your dog to sit early. I have experimented with both teaching sit early and not teaching it early. Same thing with the stand command in obedience. I am now a firm believer that it is beneficial to teach sit and stand (different from whoa) early. My dogs have done much better and made the transitions earlier when I teach sit and stand early. I think they learn early and make the associations early with different commands and each venue. I also use different collars and leashes for different venues and my dogs do know what the different collars mean.
When pressure is applied to a dog they will revert to something they know gets them a reward, especially if they are unsure and are trying to please you. Sit is usually the first choice whether it is taught or not, but it is absolutely their first choice if you have taught it. All this type of behavior means is you are putting on too much pressure or are going to fast. Slow down and watch your dog. They will let you know how fast to progress. Don't get in a hurry. Enjoy your dog and the connection training will provide between you and your dog.

I actually ended up just shutting him down on the commands that he knows(sit, down, wait) only for about a week. So 2 nights ago I reintroduced whoa, and wouldn't you know it, it broke the habit of sit! I plan on doing some work with him tonight , lets hope he's catching on.
