She tested NEGATIVE for Lymes or heartworm, the rest of the blood work will be back this week. I violated quaratine and moved her to my house, cuz after spending Sat AM with foster mom, she just cannot handle a puppy like this. She's having no problems with my pack, infact, they KNOW something is wrong with Rainee, and they almost protect and watch over her. Diagnosis, paralasis to left side of face, cause, unknown. I called original shelter who got her, and at first the folks who dropped her off tried to tell them she was a stray, then admitted she was their dog and they surrendered her BECAUSE OF THE HEAD TRAUMA. I asked if they don't have a human officer speak to folks who dump off an injured dog? Because we have laws against abuse here. She said in this case no. And she cut off information line. I think she has depth perception issues in that left eye as well, but at least her ear drum is intact. Now we decide if Rainee can be safely adopted, after quaratine period, which will be this Sat. I have appt to get her in for sign off on that form and rabies shot. If you are calm, Rainee is calm. If you crank it up a notch, she's right in there, just like a typical GSP puppy. I dunno how this is gonna go yet, but at least I have her under my control now.

Took this pic while waiting to get into the vet yesterday.  You can see the knobbie on top of her head way right, above her right eye.  Left side of her face is paralized.

All moved into my house, till we decide what to do with her.

Poor baby! She is so cute, what a terrible shame... I'd like to beat her former owners until they had head trauma... grrrrrrrrr...

That IS one's natural instinct, but we don't know they caused the trauma.  She could have flown out a moving car window, could have been rolled by a car not listening...one will never know.  So we are best to use our energy in a positive way for Rainee at this time, and not persue anger at whoever surrendered her to that kill shelter.  She passed their temperament tests.  At both shelters, which is why they did not euthanize her then.

Last night the wild animals were going round and round the roundish picnic table, rip roaring around....and ya know Rainee is pretty good "manever" wise. With the damage on her left side, she could easily have crashed full force into a picnic table like mine, moving that section of her skull over? Or even a fence post? We'll never know. She was moving pretty gracefully last night! She still plays pretty mouthy, biting on the dogs and biting on my hand almost like she uses her mouth to navigate off your hand. She did not eat very much supper last night and still has the liquid poops. But is holding it longer and longer during the day. I am still bringing her to work with me to let her out more often and walk her over lunch. She did finally notice canadian geese overhead yesterday; but did not point. Overall she is a good little girl. I put her on Petfinder as "Special Needs" yesterday, so we'll see what happens. Gotta lead on an 11 mo old owner surrender in MN, from Dogs Deserve Better group, the pup is a great hunter, but flushes...therefore banned to an outside pen. Whatever...whatta dope, check cord anyone? We will take her. I have people waiting for female puppies any day of the week.

Rainee's vet appt for spay on Monday is cancelled. The shelter that offers us low cost spay/neuters has a canine disease kililng dogs there, so they are closed to the public, till they figure it out. I suspect Strep. They WILL loose more dogs, I just hope they don't loose them all. My pup's not going anywhere near there now.

You got that right! And if the contaminated dogs came thru Milw Co Dog Pound, Rainee got out just before it hit! She lucked out one more time. But I did have one stop in there the other day, to check spay buldge...they met her at the door. I thought that was weriod...but now we know why. URGH...when you handle dogs, you have to be prepared for anything. I bet they loose alot more dogs before they can get control over it.

It rained all day Sat for our first outdoor show, so we were all inside. I took Miracle, was too tight inside to trust Rainee not to go spastic. She still has the hershey squirts. I had her to the vet Sat AM for rabies shot and another distemper, and the vet finally spotted the lump on her noggin with question marks all over his face... I said it was there three weeks ago, but the shape is changing, looking more rigid. Wonder if she's got a floater in there? There is only one way to find out and that's a CAT scan. Rescue cannot afford that, and I asked the vet if he had any buds that owe him any favors, but he did not. Still do not have the rest of her blood work back yet. But did get sign off on the rabies quarantine done, so that is in the mail today. She is on the website today. Miracle taught her how to use the doggie door OUT, but she's not sure about using it for IN yet, instead just barks her fool head off in back yard at every noise there is, mainly other dogs barking she can't even see. Little goof. This weekend, we are covering the National Rescue table during the National Specialty show out in Oconomowoc, WI. I sure hope they don't expect me to wear panty hose, cuz it ain't happening! tehe.

What does the CAT scan cost?

Don't know, I think the only place that has a CAT scan machine would be the emergency joint. And I do know it's $75- just to walk thru the doors there.

Does the emergency team run it? Local to me the specialist rents the emergency office during the day and does his speciality there. Of course he's still $100 for an office visit -- I know I've been TWICE, arg. But the cost and billing is totally independent from teh emergency clinic. I still can't imagine a scan like that would be reasonable, I had an ultrasound done on my beagle and it was pushing $350 with the visit, blood work and ultrasound! My husband used to think it was nice I didn't buy designer clothing and bags and jewlery, he now thinks we'd have saved a lot of money vs my dog habit. Drugs would be cheaper!

Yeah, one of our volunteers is a vet tech, so that was two weeks ago, Heather graciously offered to run standard blood work for Rainee, and I wasted 5 hours of my Sunday hauling her over there and waiting, and waiting, and waiting with a puppy who had bite quarantine on her head.  So we had to be locked in a quarantine room for hours, with her barking and pacing and circling in the hot room.  We decided to wait and see what blood work said first.  And I still have not gotten the rest of the results yet.  But we did find out she tested negative for lymes and heartworm.  We have well over $200- into this one puppy so far, and she has not even been spayed yet.  If we popped for a CAT scan, and results told me something to deem her unadoptable, we'd loose all.  Like a game of craps....do we sink it all into one puppy just to know?  Or do we pass, and spread the money to others needing us?  I also heard from the shelter who does our vet work, and that you all heard about with the dogs dieing of "mysterous" disease...which turned out to be Strep....  they will not reopen for any vet work for rescue dogs until June now.  And then they will not accept any dogs that we do not have proof of vaccines for, and that is not in good health.  They specifically said we'd have to have the dog in rescue for at least two weeks, before doing any vet work thru them, to make sure no contaminants enter their facility.  I TOTALLY understand this precaution.  But it will get costly for rescue to utilize other vet facilities to get those basic shots done first.  We may have to raise our adoption fee.   We intend to have a board meeting to discuss all this....and revamp our policies too.  For now, I'm declining out of state shelters that need our help.  Seems everyone has kennel cough.  Man, I have gotten lucky for it to by-pass my own dogs more then twice this year already...  what if it were strep?  All of them could have been dead.  We just cannot take chances anymore, cuz rescue simply cannot afford it.   So unless someone offers to donate a CAT scan for Rainee, she is who she is, and she'll be adopted "as is".

A friend in Indiana got a frantic call from a shelter there -- similar deal dogs dieing in 48 hours after symptoms, closing down etc etc no word on if it's strep though but very scary.

I bet it is.  They better get all the dogs on antibiotics immediately, quarantine the area.  It kills very fast.  Thus no more outta state dogs for us, unless shelter can prove vaccines and send me healthy dogs.  We just can't chance it.

See I found out alot of shelters swip swap dogs around, and any disease that it carries travels with it.

Lisa,

I just want to say i enjoy reading your posts.  It's almost like watching a tv show or something... I keep coming back to see what's happening next!  I went to your website yesterday and I must say you have some very beautiful dogs there at your rescue.  I just don't understand why they don't have homes!  My two rescues are amazing animals and are emerging from their shells quite nicely.  I wish I had room for another as I would gladly take Axle or Merkel off your hands.  Good luck with all you do!

Thanks James and everyone for your support. There are days I'd rather not be saving dogs, I'd rather not have all this on my mind; but I just cannot stop when there are dogs who need us. This weekend, we'll be working the National GSP rescue table at the GSPCA Specialty Show. I have to be there tomorrow all day. Our treasurer said she'd hold down the fort Sunday, thankfully. Northern WI Rescue is joining me tomorrow. I am minus #31 tooth today. Was a filling all falling apart, and when the scooped it all out, decay underneath was pretty bad, so I could not save that big molar. The getting there to have it removed was worse then the removal! The dogs kept me going, knowing I could not pass out in that dentist chair, I had to get home in one pcs for them. When the novacaine wore off, wasn't too much pain, ice packs helped alot. So one less to brush and floss today, only thing left is the healing. Rainee's blood work came back within normal ranges. My vet tech vol is gonna check on what would be more valuable, a CT scan or MRI. She's doing very well, actually, rarely mouthing my hands anymore. She is a spastic barker however. So today she got a bark collar! I'll try her on it later. Everyone is bailing on watching her for me weekend I have my big family deal up north end of the month. So I have to work on anyone else! She cannot be spayed till first part of June, so she can't go home, even if I did have someone looking at her, which I don't yet. My ex took ole Maggie for the weekend, as long as he was taking his dogs to the vet by our camper, I told him to get Maggie in for heartworm test too. She ain't dead yet! So that's one less needy dog in my hair for one weekend. Gotta get back to work... have a great weekend!

Vet suggests Rainee have an MRI AND CSF (cerebral spinal fluid), cost $1200-1500-  Ummm, Rescue cannot afford that.  So "as is" it shall be.

Whew, so she won't be put down?  What a relief. She's a beauty and I've been worried about that.

I hope you are on the road to recovery.

Heck no!  I have no problems with her whatsoever!  I think the only thing this test would show us is what the damage is to her skull, and if there is any further damage with spinal fluid.  At this point all we have to do it watch that eye, to make sure she has moisture in there.  And I see her inner eye lid blinking to moisturize it, versus her outter eye lid closing over it.  Now if I can get her to poop solid, we'll have it made!  She's back on rice and burger this week.  I wonder if she's not handling the lamb and rice food puppy food?  It just pours out of her.  She eats very fast, but that bowl with the stuff built on inside does slow her down alot.  She's really a sweet puppy, if handled correctly.  I just have to remind myself she is ONLY a puppy!  But she is smart as a whip.  Miracle taught her how to use the doggie door the other day. Now I gotta pay attention for that, and where she is...cuz she will only use it to go out, not in...yet.  She is not making any moves to jump my fence, luckily.
