I have a friend up in Western PA that recently had a bad situation rear it's ugly head(the big D/Custody) and he is being forced to part with his Shorthairs.
He has 3 females, 1 spayed and 2 intact:
Athena and Sorsha are almost 3 years old, both Solid Liver, have been on birds and may just need some more training to make them into a more than serviceable Bird Dog and companion. Both dogs have been here as youngsters for initial training, gun breaking, etc.... and should be some very nice dogs for hunting from what I saw when they were here 2 years ago.
Brenna is almost 2 years old, Black and White patched and ticked and while I have not seen her personally, she was from a repeat breeding that produced Athena and Sorsha and should be a very nice young dog as well.
I'm willing to say that anyone getting these pups would be getting some nice young dogs to hunt behind and have as companions. Money is not of concern to him and he is only worried about getting these dogs into homes where they will be hunted and loved.
Rescue is about to step in and take possession need be and I would like to see that avoided if at all possible, as they may never be allowed to go to a hunter thereafter, not to mention that it stretches Rescues already limited resources.
PM me for any info or contact info that I will provide.

Hi Bruce,
GSP Rescue PA is working on this as I type. We place hunting GSPs in hunting and pet homes?

My bad Deb, I ASSuMEd you didn't. DOH! I've had several go arounds with some of the Rescues that pretty much vehemently refuse to adopt to a hunter and thus has found me at odds with them. Last Rescue that I worked with that would adopt to hunters and I believe still does, was Lisa and that was with the "Lucky 7". Wisconsin doesn't really need help from a guy in WV very often, but we still keep tabs with each other from time to time ;-) I used to work with several others on transports and home visits until I expressed my displeasure with their stance of not adopting to hunters, at which point they quit asking for my help and I was all too happy to dis-associate myself with them and took to helping get pups into good homes when asked for help, without going through Rescue. I'm glad to hear you don't take that stance, as all 3 of these should go into hunting homes if such homes are available. |

Any rescue program worth its salt will place hunting fiends in hunting/companion homes and nonhunting lounge lizards in pet only homes. Mind you, all as indoor dogs. Responsible rescue is about making the right match for the dog - not the rescue program nor the adopter as those placements are bound to fail or at best, disappoint.

| I agree Deb, unfortunately, you are what has become the exception and not the rule. Mine and others experiences with some of the various Rescues the past few years has been quite the opposite and they would not adopt to hunters regardless of how or where the dog would be kept. I personally WILL NOT place a dog with anyone that will not keep the dog inside and as part of the family. They can go find their dog from someone else if they won't make them a part of the family, PERIOD. |

I am gonna say no matter how small for a gsp they are probably too big for my friend who is sort of looking for another dog to be buddies with their current one...plus it is a must they find one that is fixed...
I hope they find homes! |

Splat, Guessing from the editing of your post, that Deb contacted you to let you know that Rescue demanded the owner turn the dogs over to them? |

Whoa. I do not know what you mean in your answer to "Splat" about editing but I think you had better have the correct information before you go making statements like that on message boards! GSP Rescue of Pa, has NEVER demanded that this owner turn the dogs over to us. Many people in rescue have been bending over backwards to help this family. Even sending their own money for a long time now for dog food, flea infestation, etc. Deb has offered her own money for vetting of some dogs not even coming into rescue just to protect the dogs as they have been threatended to be taken to the SPCA. Also has been helping this family find other breed rescues for the bassetts and doxie's and setting up transport. Seems you may want to contact rescue first if you have questions about our procedures rather than post inaccurate information. We have a great rescue and I am very proud to be a part of it as our dogs receive wonderful care. I would be happy to answer any of your questions if you want to e-mail me privately. Hi Bruce,
I called the owner and he said he never said that to anyone so I'm not sure why you'd posted such a that? We don't demand nor seize dogs.
As to offering free dogs, well there are some dangers to doing that and for quite a number of reasons.

Well Deb, It appears that Bob Kalgren bold face lied to both of us and I apologize for taking him for his words. He back pedaled today when called and confronted, saying it was all just a big misunderstanding..... FACT: When called Saturday to let him know we had found homes for 2 of the pups and had a potential 3rd home, Bob stated that you had called him chipped off about my post here and declared that Rescue was paying for Vetting the pups and demanded he turn them over to you/Rescue and made additional threatening innuendo's to the effect of calling SPCA on him, that it was illegal to cross State lines without Health Cert's and the legalities/liabilities involved with doing so and comments about the "best interest" of his daughters. I'm not making this up, it's what he said and when I contacted his oldest via email, this was her response in email: "I asked Dad about the other pups, and he said that he had no choice. Deb is going to get them up to date on their shots. Mom had found a home for Sorsha too. She's upset because she has to tell the kid that he can't have her." Would you like a screenshot of the email? I have nothing to hide. So I do apologize for having taken him for his word and not contacted you first, but I was very peeved after my efforts to find homes to help, when you had told me Rescue had limited resources and no Fosters, so I reacted poorly. As for placing dogs for free, Rescue has nothing on me when it comes to how selective I am about homes I place dogs in. I'm extremely picky. Home 1 was a gentleman with a 1500 acre farm in PA, whom lived by himself, sons all grown and the dog would be a constant companion to him day and night, including riding in the truck, the farm tractor while working the farm and on the couch with him watching the tube. The pup would likely not have been hunted, but would have had the opportunity to "hunt" a swampy woodlot section of his property where he has Grouse and resident Woodcock and would have never seen a kennel or crate. He had to put his 13 year old Shorthair to sleep several weeks ago due to health issues. Home 2 was a home that I know personally, where the dog would have been an inside family companion with children, would have been hunted and probably run in Hunt Test for the fun of it for the whole family. I know these folks well and would LOVE TO BE THEIR DOG! LOL! Home 3 that came about Sunday eve, was also someone I know personally and would have been for the gentleman's parents. He would likely have hunted with the dog as would his Father, whom is retired and quite active. All 3 were inside homes, that didn't care if they were spayed, were aware of health concerns and knew they would have to Vet them ASAP and might have some time in getting them back to where they belonged, as well as possible baggage that might come with them. None cared and all are more than capable with dogs. That all said, I hope you can see why I got so upset. I have passed your contact on to all 3 and you may be contacted by 2 of them, but I don't hold out any hope on Home 1, as Bob was apparently very rude, indignant and inconsiderate to him when the gent called him and the fellow said he wants nothing to do with anything about "that man". Once Derrick is back where he belongs health and manners wise, I may see if he would like him if he hasn't contacted you already. Again, I do apologize for having taken him for his word and not contacting you to verify. |

Hi Bruce,
Hasn't this become complicated and convoluted considering there were 11 dogs to be rehomed when you and I were first contacted privately? If you go back to that private email, you'll see that the reference to the SPCA was from the family and not rescue, hence why rescue scrambled to have them all vetted asap and at rescue/volunteers' expense. The added health certificate for Derrick was not a threat but a courtesy to you as it's required when a dog crosses state lines.
We'll continue to help the family and hopefully soon, this chapter will end and the book closed.

Good Saturday Deb, Yes. it has/had. It's a shame when we both set out to help the family and more importantly, the dogs, that the owner chose to word conversations with me so as to pit us at odds. He did admit yesterday that you had personally paid for the vetting and I have to say, HUGE KUDOS to you on your compassion and dedication to the animals. I know now that I was seriously misled by him, for no good reason at all and once again, my sincerest apologies for believing his words and not checking with you as to the validity. I hope to hear this book ends with a "Happily Ever After"! |

PS. Derrick is recovering well and seems quite content with the attention he is getting. He was in terrible shape being around 10-15 pounds under weight, had open sores on his breast and looked as though he had been Neutered by banding from the open wound where his....ahemmmmm, "jewels" used to be. My Vet and I will have him back in top health and form in no time. |

Hello-
Just checking on the status of the dogs you were posting about. We live in NW PA & are looking for a GSP & are considering a rescue. Please let us know if you are still looking for homes for any of these dogs.
Thanks-
Lois & Randy |
