That is too funny. I have been following this exchange as I have found it both interesting and full of good info. I am probably more like pixie in how I enjoy hunting with my dogs which is why I have stuck to the Hunt Tests, although I have dabbled in Walking Field Trials. I don't ride anymore because of my back, but I can still walk. My boy, Ringo, though does adjust his hunting style to the terrain. I know he runs much bigger in more wide open terrains and shortens it up when we are in a more densely wooded and overgrown area. He always knows where I am and when I change course he adjusts accordingly. I have never used hand signals or a whistle as I find the whistles annoying and have not needed hand signals. All I have to do is change direction and so does my boy. I am just glad that there are different venues that we can all enjoy with our dogs and that these dogs are versatile enough they can adjust to what we like and what we can do.

I got spoiled last year though as a breeder friend was at a Hunt Test that I had Ringo at and after it was all over we had the opportunity to run our dogs again, but we did it from my friends Mule. Boy was that nice and the dogs really moved out in front of us. I actually got back to camp and was not even tired or sweaty. I think I could get spoiled by that Mule.

You've just hit on the most important point that is so often overlooked Bev. These dogs are plenty smart enough, dare I say smarter than we are, that they can shift gears accordingly on the fly and never miss a beat. At least the goods ones do IME. I Grouse hunt my dogs in some of the toughest, narliest and densest covers a bird hunter dares to go..... 60-80 degree  slopes are the norm, with blow downs, Hazel tangles covered up with Grape vine tangles and an understory of Greenbriar and Blackberry cane, all on top of rock slides. These covers are the kind that lead many to believe they have to have a dog that never gets more than 30 yards away, but yet it is the same cover I hunt with my Trial dogs that when turned loose on the Grasslands have shown on the Garmin Astro to be working upwards of 1400 yards away. In these covers, they might work at 50-150 yards and it is a pretty routine trip for me to limit early and then spend the rest of the day just blanking birds off and working on manners. The good ones adjust to cover and handle off of the owner's movements regardless of preconceived notions about their Breeding and Genetics.

Here's some pix of one of my covers from last year in the snow:

Looking up the hill to the cliff face:

Bit of an overlook on a snowy day:

Another cover last Fall:

Checking back:

Same dog at about 500-600 yards with the zoom, standing a Sharptail in SD on the Grasslands:

We hunt the same cover in NY. Problem is - when the dog is in really bad stuff, regardless of the dog's range, not like the stuff you posted, we can't see the dog and can't get in it to make a shot. And honestly, the bird isn't worth all that much to us that we have to get all scratched up. If I can't see or hear my dog he's too far. I'm not going thru tick infested, thorny, tripping, dense cover to get a grouse that just ain't gonna be there when I do and if it is the dog will get messed up during the retrieve. The dogs maybe be quiet, but humans crash thru like elephants.
My dogs also know where we are and don't get lost, thing is, if I'm not going where they are - they don't need to be there either. Why waste energy? Not to mention in some places there's so many hunters out we have to intentionally move to another area.
My dogs are not close b/cof poor breeding - they are close b/c thats what we've taught them to be. Altho, one is an AA contender and the other is only 100 yard dog.

A good handler can "shorten up" a smart, biddable big-running poniting dog if the cover/conditions require it.

However, I've yet to see a good handler "push out" a smart, biddable close-working pointing dog if the cover/conditions required it.
