We consider a haul anything more then 3 hours each way. HTs are within 2 hours.NAVHDA tests are within 1 1/2hours and NADKC tests are a minimum 5 hours. I am pretty sure there are FTs in NJ and CT,maybe I missed them this spring, but I'm sure the same clubs that do HTs do FTs.
I don't think we would travel 3 states and 7 hours each way for a FT.
I will keep an eye out for fall and next spring FTs.

Thanks a bunch for all the info.

Another question : on the premium it says it's a retreiving stake with retreives as a call back. How does a call back work? Is the call back optional?

In response to Bev's question about what constitutes a haul, we here in the northeast have to consider TRAFFIC. For example, I drive 80 miles every week to take Soleil for her field traning lesson. I have to realistically allow 1 hour and 40 minutes. If I am going there in the early morning and can speed (all roads are posted 55 - 65 mph, with back and side roads 30 - 50 mph), I can make it in 1 1/2 hours. That same trip can also take over 2 hours, as it did last week when an accident stopped mecold for 1/2 hour.

I drove to Delaware and back two weekends in a row, which was a 3 hour drive down and about 3 1/2 hours back, exhausting for me to do in one day. (360+ miles round trip.)

As to field trials in NY and CT, the last field trial of the NJ season is next weekend. CT may have one or two more, not sure. Hunt test season is over in NJ, too, but there are some hunt tests in PA, and in New England in May. The weather can be fine or it can be very hot.

Francine, a call back is done after the dogs run. The judges choose their top 4 dogs (and if they have enough good runs, a back up or 2)
A bird is planted in a field, the judges, handler & 2 gunners enter field. Dog has to work bird at MH level - steady to wing & shot until sent, retrieve to hand. You can be more vocal than in MH though. You cannot win or place if you choose not to do the call back for the retrieve, so it is not really optional. (you can opt out, but your dog can then not be used)

Francine,
Not all pointing dog clubs that do hunt tests do field trials. For example Sleepy Hollow GSPC and Mayflower GSPC do hunt tests but do not do filed trials. Then also not all clubs that do field trials do walking field trials. For example Hudson Valley GSPC and Nutmeg GSPC both do two horseback field trials but neither do a walking field trial. There are several reasons for the later case. AKC has a limit on the number of field trials a club can put on during the year. 2 horseback trials and a third trial if it is walking. Also with the limited places where the clubs can run a trial the number of weekends that any one club can get pretty much shuts down the opportunity to even run a walking field trial. So bottom line is that within your travel restrictions I can think, off the top of my head, of three opportunities to do a walking field trail during the year. Eastern GSPC walking field trial held in Feb. The Vizsla club that I mentioned in an earlier post. Finally a Brittany club which holds theirs late August or early Sept. There is probably another Brittany club up in MA or ME that may also have a walking field trial.
